Energy Efficiency and Renewables - Exhibition and Conference for South-East Europe, 5-7 April 2016, Sofia, Bulgaria, organizer: Via Expo

According the Renewable energy progress report Europe is still ahead of most other regions (e.g. China and the USA) in terms of its share of renewable electricity, or installed renewable power per capita. The deployment of renewables in the EU has resulted in around 388 Mt of gross avoided CO2 emissions in 2013 and a reduction in the EU demand of fossil fuels of 116 Mtoe. Avoided imported fuel costs due to increasing use of renewable energy amount to at least EUR 30 billion a year.
Europe is preparing for the future 2030 climate and energy targets and South-East Europe plays an important role for the further implementation of energy efficiency solutions and renewables installations.
These topics are in the spotlight of the EE & RE 2016 – one of the flagship events in SE Europe. Its preparation is in process and the new date is settled: 5-7 April 2016, Sofia, Bulgaria. Meanwhile, we
keep you informed what is happening in the Region and in the July newsletter we have included some news which may deserve your attention.

Have a very nice and sunny summer,
Via Expo Team

The new operational program "Competitiveness and Innovation" will once again finance the business in Bulgaria under the current energy efficiency scheme
Nearly 311M Euros or 22.35% of the program budget will target energy and resource efficiency. Certain activities will be funded for: improving energy efficiency within enterprises; carrying out construction activities in order to reduce the energy consumption of existing enterprise buildings; purchasing of heating and cooling equipment and / or production of electricity from renewable energy sources for own consumption; consulting services for conducting energy audit.

ENTSO: 2030 Projected Renewables Growth in Bulgaria, Greece, Romania Necessitates Grid Developments
A number of cross-border and internal power lines in Bulgaria and the region, as well as the extension of Chaira pumped hydroelectric storage, are crucial for market connectivity and RES integration, ENTSO-E points out in updated draft of grid development plan.
The expected renewable energy growth in the Continental South-East (CSE) region and namely in Bulgaria, Greece and Romania, necessitates planning and implementation of new energy infrastructure to up the trans-border capacity and electricity market integration.
Despite the moderate growth of renewables in this region, Bulgaria, Greece and Romania, would be the countries with the biggest spur in renewables, ENTSO-E (the European Network of Transmission System Operators) argued in its ten year grid development draft plan, which oversees energy trends by 2030. According to ENTSO-E Bulgaria will see a tremendous growth of PV and wind power generation. While in 2012 the country had 1 GW of PV and 700 MW of wind, by the end of the next decade ENTSO-E forecasts the staggering 8 GW of PV and 4 GW of wind. On the regional level, between 2012 and 2030 PV will reach 41 GW (up from 5 GW), wind – 22 GW (up from 6 GW), and hydro – 31 GW (up from 22 GW). To read the full article, click here

The Agency for Sustainable Energy Development (SEDA) has developed a new instrument to promote energy efficiency.
The "White certificates" are already functioning in 17 countries of the European Union. They are documents certifying that certain amount of energy savings has been achieved. The product is intended for all participants within the energy chain, but most of all for electricity traders and large enterprises.
White Certificates are designed to be traded on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange Market. The mechanism for realizing energy savings involves an initial inspection of buildings and facilities for their energy consumption and efficiency. After that, measures are carried out - sanitation, energy efficient appliances and lighting and up-to-date equipment. The next step is conducting an audit for energy efficiency. A certificate is issued for the attained savings, which can be traded to industrial producers or traders of heat, electricity or natural gas, who have not achieved energy efficiency. Traders of electricity and heat will also participate in the market for white certificates and they will have to persuade their customers to implement energy efficiency measures. Energy savings are particularly suitable in view of the forthcoming market liberalization. SEDA has developed a hybrid model of white certificate application, based on the experience of different countries.

Partner of EE & RE 2016
The Covenant of Mayors is the main European movement involving local and regional management bodies, voluntarily committed to increasing energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources on their territories. Following this commitment, Covenant signatories aim to achieve and surpass the EU targets for reducing the emissions of CO2 by at least 20% by 2020.
