2016 European Heritage Awards Ceremony at Teatro de la Zarzuela, Madrid

Joining forces for the European Year of Heritage 2018

The European Commission’s recent announcement to propose a European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018 was enthusiastically welcomed and discussed by hundreds of heritage players from all over Europe during the European Heritage Congress in Madrid from 22-27 May 2016.
During the European Heritage Awards Ceremony held at the Zarzuela Theatre on 24 May, EU Commissioner for Culture Tibor Navracsics called on all heritage stakeholders “to be a vital part of the Commission’s efforts to make this Year a success”, while Europa Nostra’s President Plácido Domingo reiterated that Europa Nostra stands ready to actively contribute to the effective implementation of this momentous initiative, which has the potential to generate the much needed positive energy and cohesive force between communities and citizens in Europe.
A similar message was conveyed by Plácido Domingo to the European Commission’s President Jean-Claude Juncker at their meeting in Brussels on 18 May. Read more

Europe Lecture with UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova

“The protection of heritage has become a humanitarian imperative and a security issue,” stated UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova at the Europe Lecture 2016 held on 13 June in The Hague. The event, which was organised by the European Lecture Foundation in collaboration with Europa Nostra and the Netherlands National Commission for UNESCO, gathered 300 people. Read more


Key role for heritage in EU’s first ever strategy on cultural diplomacy

During the high-level conference ‘#Unite4Heritage - Cultural Diversity under Attack: Protecting Heritage for Peace’ held in Brussels on 9-10 June 2016 and hosted by UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova, the European Commission’s Vice-President Federica Mogherini stressed (via video) the key role for cultural heritage in the EU’s first ever strategy on cultural diplomacy. Plácido Domingo and Europa Nostra visit Bougival, near Paris

On 19 June, Maestro Plácido Domingo visited the small town of Bougival, located 18 km south of Paris, which preserve the memory of an impressive number of 19th century European artists, ranging from Impressionist painters, great French composer Georges Bizet, Spanish-born mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot-Garcia, to great Russian writer Ivan Tourgeniev. Europa Nostra's President was welcomed by Luc Wattelle, Mayor of Bougival and by Olivier Delaporte, Mayor of La Celle Saint-Cloud. Read more


The 7 Most Endangered 2016: missions to France and Finland

Colbert Swing Bridge in Dieppe in France and Helsinki-Malmi Airport in Finland, listed among ‘The 7 Most Endangered’ heritage sites in Europe in 2016, were visited by heritage and financial experts from Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank Institute from 31 May to 3 June. These delegations met with local and regional stakeholders to discuss action plans to save and enhance the two endangered sites. Read more
