Born in Rome, Italy, LILI N is a student of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. The pop singer has, as Vanyaland put it, “an intriguing storyline, and an impressive one for her 20 years of age, but much of it has yet to cross over the Atlantic.” Of course, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because it “allows ourselves to focus solely on the most important aspect of her budding career: her music.”
Growing up in a musical household – her mother was a successful opera singer and her father played vinyl records continuously – allowed LILI N to develop her craft at a remarkably young age. “I started playing piano on my own because we had this huge grand piano in my mom’s house in Rome,” she shares. “It just seemed natural to me, and I couldn’t really play piano without ending up writing a song.” Perhaps just as impressive: LILI N has spent nearly all of her young life as a voice-over artist, supplying the Italian voice of Cindy Lou, Lilo and Lucy in animated features like The Grinch, Lilo & Stitch and Narnia.
Though she and her sister would reenact all of Grease, Cats and Moulin Rouge in their living room, LILI N's biggest influences are some of music’s most unique voices, like Lou Reed, Lady Gaga, Sia and Frank Ocean. Like the artists she looks up to, LILI N uses her emotions as inspiration. “I want to always remain an honest writer,” she explains. “Listening to my friends speak, or even having a conversation with an Uber driver – that could be inspiration. It’s important to listen to everyone around me.”
With her sultry voice and inimitable dream pop sound, LILI N is dedicated to creating a movement through her music. “I want my songs to deliver a very open message to the world, and I want everyone to appreciate the power of the mind. We don’t need drugs or alcohol or mind-altering substances to feel good. These things aren’t as powerful as the world we create individually. And nothing makes you feel as good as music can.”
LILI N’s "Paper Heart" will officially drop on all DSPs on July 22nd.
