Extraordinary Experience of the Month
Over the last seventy years thousands of people have written to the Rhine Research Center to share their unusual experiences.  Many were collected by Dr. Louisa Rhine who felt that these stories collectively provided a glimpse into a reality difficult to explain away simply as a series of mistakes of testimony, over interpretation, imagination, or coincidence.

In response to our request for reports of unexplained physical events that occur around times of death or crisis (see Rhine.org), we received two examples of precognitive dreams that occurred around the time of the Japanese tsunami of March 11th, 2011.
First Precognitive Dream --received 03/11/11 from female correspondent

I have contacted the Rhine Research Center previously due to what you have called Pre-cognitive dreams. I dreamt about 9-11 about a week or so before it happened. I dreamt about the space shuttle going down.

At the beginning of this week I had a dream that I believe was a precognitive dream about the Tsunami that we are experiencing today. I dreamt that I was in my car (with my son, although that has no real bearing on the dream) and that all of a sudden, we were told to evacuate and that they were making everyone (in shopping centers, on the road, everywhere) go off of this bridge and grab life preservers and that we had to get away and hide.

There were people of importance in the dream who were directing us and telling us what to do. Inside of the life preservers were emergency kits.

I know that this isn't specific to Japan, but that is how my dreams are. They are specific to the TYPE of disaster that is going to happen (something to do with water/flooding), but not to the disaster itself. I felt very strongly about this dream because it was very VIVID just like the other two precognitive dreams I've had. I have been telling my friends at work about the dream and that I thought something was going to happen that had to do with water.

Comments:
Thank you for sending in this account of what seems like a fairly strong precognitive dream of the current terrible events that are happening in Japan. We have now heard several similar accounts about this particular catastrophe but I think your dream is as dramatic as any. And it is helpful and perhaps informative to others that you have learned to recognize your own personal way of dreaming, focusing on the type of event and the vividness of the dream, rather than on the actual images of the dream itself. My mother Louisa Rhine who started collecting our collection of psi experiences years ago did note that about while the largest number were very realistic like photographs, there were many where it was "unrealistic" and yet symbolically as well as time-wise very meaningful, so that it gave strong evidence of something actually psychic that was to happen. -- Dr. Sally Rhine

Second Precognitive Dream  --received 03/26/11 from male correspondent

Okay, the tsunami dream...
The term, or the concept, of a tsunami is not something I have ever thought much about or feared.

The dream: I was with my brother and his family on a vacation. We were in a shiny new white pick-up truck. We had just parked it and were walking into a sort of park on a mountain top. As we approached the area of interest on foot from the parking lot we had to cross over a little wooden footbridge with railing that was maybe 10 feet long. There was no real area beneath the footbridge. On our way to the footbridge we noticed that people seemed to be leaving the area, and were coming over the footbridge in our direction, not in a panic, but as if the park were closing.

Just on the other side of the footbridge was a lady in an orange worker's vest, a vest like you might see on a highway construction crew. She had meant to stop us to turn us back but she got distracted by other people stopping to speak with her about something. My brother said under his breath something like, "let's keep going ahead and see what's here, we've come this far." I agreed but said we should be really careful because everyone was leaving for a reason. As we walked onward, away from the exiting park-goers and workers who had been controlling the park, along a sidewalk I saw that we were on top of one side of a VERY beautiful valley where just below us two steep mountainsides came together.

Japan as a place was not in my mind at all.. I think that I was thinking we were in the American Northwest, but I'm not 100% sure. I do know we were not at home. In front of us on our side of the valley were about eight or 10 fine, brick, large, two-storied, and new, square, houses, cube shaped.. From the horizon in front of us a few construction workers in their orange vests and yellow hard hats came running past us toward the parking lot behind us and told us to get back!

I looked down at the bottom of the valley and saw a raging torrent of black water with jagged waves attacking the valley just below us and moving through with a force like nothing I had ever seen, and it was moving in what seemed to me to be an unnatural way. I couldn't understand what the cause was of what I was seeing. What tipped me off that something wasn't normal was that what should have been white water on the wave crests was not white but was dark, and that the water in the valley just came from seemingly no where and was running against ordinary green grass growing on the valley sides. There was NO sign of a riverbank ever having been there. And the houses were too close to the strange, raging dark water. More workers ran from the house sites and up and out past us.

I was very worried. I thought to myself that the water could not be from a flood because it had not been raining. I tried to picture in my mind where it might be coming from, so I'd know what to expect from it, but I could only see in my mind's eye that there was nothing it should have been coming from. Where in the world it had come from so quickly and out of no where was a mystery to me and it freaked me out. That was the part of the dream that was most disturbing. And just as it came in, it continued on through the valley bottom and left in its path dark mud and washed out holes, trees downed, etc. And I walked down the mountainside a little so I could see better and watched the tail-end of this heap of water go onward through the valley, like watching a caboose on the end of a destructive train as it went through the valley bottom until it was out of my sight. My brother and I were flabbergasted and just stood and looked at each other wondering what the hell that was. Another construction worker in a vest and yellow hard hat ran by us and said that a rescue team had been down there at the bottom of the valley rescuing a seven year old boy who had had his hand trapped in some fallen rock or something. But the water hit and surprised the rescue team while he was still stuck and that the rescuers had had to cut off his trapped hand in order to save him and keep him from drowning in the rushing water. Sickening to hear this part. Then this man said (and even though it had not been a few minutes since the inundation of water had come and gone) that the rescuers had worked on him an hour before he was stabilized and transported. The disturbing imagery from that part of the dream woke me up.

Before I got out of bed I stopped to think of anyone I might know who lives in a mountainous place like that who I might need to warn to be on the lookout for flood-like waters.. I was horrified when I later turned on the TV and saw the hills and valleys and black flooding waters of the tsunami in Japan. The images of the dream matched the valleys and hills of Japan (and the shape of some of the cube shaped houses, too) and it had happened there as I dreamed of it here. Just why I dream sometimes of things as they happen and of things I cannot affect, I do not know."

That's the worst part of psychic dreams, I'm usually left worrying. As much as I have used them to help people and I wouldn't change it, I feel like they somehow age me.
Comments:
Thanks for reporting your recent dream that does indeed sound like a very dramatic psychic awareness of the Japanese tsunami.

We sympathize with your worry about why you dream of things that you are not able to change. In my co-authored book The Gift about ESP experiences, we discuss this very dilemma (Is Fate Inevitable?) with reports of some experiences that do indeed lead to a positive outcome, while many do not. However, the fact that sometimes you have apparently been able to help people in this way is an important first step. And perhaps with enough study of gifted people like yourself and others, we may one day learn enough to use psi as a type of early warning system.. Although perhaps never enough for such a huge natural tragedy as in this case.  -- Dr. Sally Rhine
