Predicting tumor-positive post-lumpectomy margin risk with breast MRI
Breast MRI may help identify women at risk of having positive tumor margins following breast conservation surgery for invasive carcinoma. In a study of over 500 patients, radiologists identified several indicators on dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) breast MRI that could benefit surgeons in clinical pre-operative decision making.


Reducing unnecessary repeat knee X-rays of osteoarthrosis patients
Knee radiographs are often ordered for patients with moderate to severe knee osteoarthrosis who return for follow-up visits, but the radiographs may not be necessary. Radiologists at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas conducted a study to determine the percentage of repeat knee radiographs performed, and then began a campaign to reduce them.


Metal artifact reduction using dual-layer spectral CT
For patients who have implant-related complications, CT is the preferred imaging exam but its diagnostic utility may be reduced or compromised by artifacts from metal implants. Dual-layer spectral CT, a new technology, shows promise for metal artifact reduction.


Using image-guided percutaneous approach to retrieve extra-esophageal metal bristle
Interventional radiologists used a novel image-guided minimally invasive percutaneous approach to safely remove a piece of metal from outside the esophagus of a pediatric patient after a failed esophageoscopy. They describe the technique in an article published in the May 17, 2019 online edition of Pediatric Radiology.

The ACR elected new officers at its annual meeting held in May. Debra L. Monticciolo, MD, has been elected president and Katarzyna J. Macura, MD vice president. Daniel Picus, MD is the recipient of the 2019 William T. Thorwath Jr. MD Award, an honor the ACR gives for excellence in the field of economics and health policy.

2019 Safety FiRsT Grant Program
Applications for the 2019 Safety FiRsT® grant program are now being accepted by the ASRT Foundation and Canon Medical Systems. The program, now in its fifth year and funded by a grant from Canon Medical, is an initiative that provides funds for radiologic technologists to improve workplace safety measures.
