2014 European Heritage Awards Ceremony in Vienna

Around 1200 people from all over Europe assembled at the iconic Burgtheater to pay tribute to this year’s highest achievements in the heritage field and to celebrate Europe as a ‘symphony of cultures’, on the evening of 5 May. Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Plácido Domingo, the renowned opera singer and President of Europa Nostra, hosted the event. The ceremony was honoured by the presence of the Austrian Federal Chancellor, Werner Faymann, and the Minister for Arts and Culture, Josef Ostermayer. Read more

Maestro Domingo becomes ‘Herr Professor’

Plácido Domingo was conferred the honorary title of Professor, one of the most prestigious in Austria, at the European Heritage Awards Ceremony at the Burgtheater on 5 May. Read more

EU Council adopts first-ever Conclusions on cultural heritage

For the first time ever, the Council of the European Union has adopted Conclusions on cultural heritage as a strategic resource for a sustainable Europe. Under the leadership of the Hellenic Presidency of the European Union, the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council adopted these historic conclusions at its meeting on 21 May in Brussels. EU Prize for Cultural Heritage: Europa Nostra reappointed

Europa Nostra has been selected by the European Commission to be the organising partner of the annual European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage for a new period of 4 years, from 2015 to 2018. The selection was made following an open call for proposals launched at the beginning of this year on the basis of the new EU Creative Europe programme. Read more

Europe’s 7 Most Endangered for 2014 announced

‘The 7 Most Endangered’ 2014 were revealed by Denis de Kergorlay, Executive President of Europa Nostra, and Guy Clausse, Acting Dean of the European Investment Bank Institute at a public event at the Dorotheum in Vienna on 4 May. On this year’s list are monuments and heritage sites from Belgium, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Russia and Serbia. Read more

‘ENtopia: Our Places in Europe’ promoted at Chios conference

The first international conference dedicated to Europa Nostra’s new programme ‘ENtopia: Our Places in Europe’ took place on the island of Chios in Greece on 28-30 March. This new programme aims to assist small communities in preserving their historic, architectural and environmental heritage. The conference, which was organised by Elliniki Etairia, assembled 70 participants from ten countries. Read more

‘New Narrative for Europe’ debate in Vienna

Europa Nostra held a panel discussion with representatives from the worlds of culture, politics and business to promote the role of culture and heritage within the ‘New Narrative for Europe' and the wider process of European integration at the Dorotheum in Vienna in the afternoon of 4 May. Around 200 people participated in the event. Read more
