Issue #153
April 2018
I know the calendar says it's April but this has been a COLD winter and an ever COLDER Spring here in North Carolina. Regardless of the weather however, it's almost time for the big AQS Quiltweek show in Paducah, KY and we are currently in the throes of getting ready to take that long ride (on Monday to be exact)!
So I hope you enjoy this edition of Kat Bytes! We included most of our usual features along with a timely update on improving YOUR FaceBook security AND an impromptu sale on one of our most popular hardware items!

"Eye Candy" from March
So... most of you know that last month's "Handbag of the Month" contest was the last of it's kind and since so many of you have told me how much you enjoy seeing & being inspired by the bags our customers make using our patterns we've instituted a new format for doing that! The bags you see below are among those that customers have shared either on our FaceBook business page, by way of Instagram or on our brand new Group page on FaceBook.
Thanks to ALL who posted pictures last month! They were ALL great but these were my favorites!

Deb Przybylski‘s Walkabout Wallet
is not only strikingly beautiful but her fussy-cutting was nothing short of terrific!
The exterior of Celia Ann Oliver‘s Bellagio Bag  is in WOOL! Now that's mighty impressive!
Diana Brant’s Guardian has it all! Fun colors, expert fussy-cutting & on-point embroidery!
Shelly Green’s Quattro
Seeing the Northern lights is on my bucket list & it looks like Shelly is a fan too!
This is Shelly Green’s Guardian
Looks like Shelly is planning a trip in the near future to VEGAS?
It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who LOVES black & white fabrics! Jill Anderson’s Everyday Attache is gorgeous!
Here's Lydia Stang’s Go-Go Compact
She was the 1st person to post a picture of our new pattern, the Go-Go Compact!
Angie McCormick‘s Cosmo Convertible
This bag strikes me as a happy summertime bag!
Georgia Segura’s Go-Go Compact
And if you love frogs, how could you resist this cutie!
And finally, if you like animal print (and I do) how could you not flip for Marcie Cooper’s Quattro w/matching Porta-Pockets Purse Insert?

NEW from StudioKat Designs!
we've been busy working on the next new zipper style to add to our ever-growing portfolio!
I feel the color we've chosen for the tape itself as well as the metal color for the zipper teeth and pull is something our line needs and will be well-received by our customers, but... I need to decide on the zipper pull!
I've narrowed it down to the following choices at right and would love to hear YOUR opinion as to which we should choose.

The "Tech" Desk- FaceBook Privacy Settings
As you may have realized by now, FaceBook has some "privacy issues" & can’t really be trusted with your data, so I thought I'd devote a little extra time this month (in lieu of other things I normally post) to share some concrete things you can (and should) do to restrict the amount of data FaceBook has on you.
Keep your profile sparse
Putting your place of work and education history on your profile is great for connecting with old school friends but your profile reveals a ton of information about you, but it doesn’t have to. Open up your profile page on the web, then click Edit Profile. Click the pen icon to the right of anything you don’t want to be there, then Options, then Delete.
Deleting data like this from your Facebook profile doesn’t necessarily mean Facebook will forget it ever existed—but clearing up your profile will stop apps you connect in the future from accessing it. You should also vow to ignore Facebook’s prompts to add more details to your profile from this point on.
Keep third-party apps disconnected
The now infamous Cambridge Analytica data harvesting happened through a third-party Facebook app—in this case a personality test, and here's the deal... the more apps and sites you connect to your Facebook account, the more exposed you are.
Go to the Apps page in your Facebook settings on the web, and click the Remove button (the small x) next to everything you see on this page, unless you absolutely can’t live without a certain app and trust it to use your data responsibly. Read through the confirmation message on screen, then click the Remove button again to confirm.
This doesn’t necessarily delete data those apps have already collected on you, but it’s a start. You should also click Edit under Apps others use and untick all the boxes you see—if you have friends who love personality tests (and don't we all?), this stops those apps from looking at your data too.
Keep on top of your privacy settings
Facebook likes to track you outside Facebook too, something which you can limit by opening up   the Ads page of your Facebook settings on the web and turning the top option under Ad settings (“Ads based on my use of websites and apps”) to Off. You can also visit your ad preferences page and remove anything you find under the "Your interests" heading.
To further limit the information Facebook can gather on you when you’re not actually on Facebook, head to the YourAdChoices page run by the Digital Advertising Alliance. Find the Facebook entry—and all the others you want to limit the activity of (and I had 134 entries!!!)—and tick the Opt Out box (note that you need to do this for every browser you’re logged into Facebook on).
Completing these options should help you clean up your tracks as much
as is possible at the moment. I'll keep you posted if I hear more!
