Samantha Levey, the current Miss Pacific Palisades, was among those who were angered as another shocking headline cast dark clouds over the world of pageants. Parents, doctors and child welfare proponents alike were up in arms when Kerry Campbell of San Francisco announced on Good Morning America that she was giving her eight year old daughter Botox injections. On the broadcast, she stated the competition of pageants as the reason for her eight year old to worry about "wrinkles."

“I think the whole thing is outrageous and completely unacceptable,” stated Samantha. “As someone who cares about a child's welfare and is invested in helping children with real struggles, like pediatric cancer, I cannot believe that Ms. Campbell would even consider doing this to her child. It sends and teaches the wrong message on so many levels. Children who enter pageants should only be in them because they are having fun and meeting other children who like to do similar activities. It should never be about mothers forcing their children into something—in this case, something really disgusting. No child would willingly ask for injections, or even know what Botox is or how it works. This little girl is eight years old. This is about woman who was making very bad decisions for her child.”

Samantha, who agrees that there are definitely pressures of competition in pageantry, believes that Botox is more than any mother should administer to their child in the quest for beauty.

“I am in a beauty pageant. I am 25 years old and able to make decisions on my own. There are pressures within the pageant world, but there are also pressures in everyday life. An injection is not going to solve the problems. Part of being in a pageant is having confidence and not bowing to the insecurities of others, and your mother is the one that you hope will be there to support you, not hurt you.”

Samantha will be running for the Miss California crown in December, 2011.
