Los Angeles, CA (July 17, 2018) — Fans of all things dark and mysterious will convene at the State Theatre in downtown Los Angeles on November 10th, 2018 from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. for Cloak & Dagger 2018, a magical and immersive day-into-evening celebration featuring She Wants Revenge, The Faint, HEALTH, Black Mare, Boy Harsher, Tamaryn, and BOAN; plus, the US debut and only American appearance ever by “godfathers of techno” DAF (Gabriel "Gabi" Delgado-López and Robert Görl). This once-in-a-lifetime event is presented by Spaceland Presents, Restless Nites, and Cloak & Dagger. The multi-genre, darker spectrum sounds will be curated by DJ Adam 12 (Adam Bravin of She Wants Revenge) and talent buyer Brian Tarney (Restless Nites). This will be the first show in 20 years at the State Theatre, the largest of the classic theaters on Broadway, and the first show since being converted back to a performance space from an old cult church.
This C&D event is a stand alone show, with plans to return in 2019 with the second Cloak & Dagger Festival.
Pivotal figures in the evolution of electronic music, DAF/Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft have influenced industrial, techno, hip-hop, punk, and metal acts around the world since they formed in 1978 in Germany. Their combination of punk rock’s energy with live drums and synthesizers is often cited by purists like Steve Albini, who has said, "The electronic music I liked was radical and different, shit like the White Noise, Xenakis, Suicide, Kraftwerk, and the earliest stuff from Cabaret Voltaire, SPK and DAF. When that scene and those people got co-opted by dance/club music I felt like we’d lost a war.” This rare US appearance by DAF follows the release of their 40-year career-spanning box set in September.
“We are extremely excited to present the very first DAF performance in the United States ever, the same year they are celebrating their 40 year anniversary as a band,” says Bravin. “My band, She Wants Revenge, will be a part of the lineup again and we definitely have some surprises lined up for this show.”
She Wants Revenge emerged in 2003 and have since toured with Depeche Mode and the Psychedelic Furs, gaining new fans in 2015 when American Horror Story: Hotel licensed “Tear You Apart.” Also in 2015, Producer Michael Patterson and Bravin jumpstarted the Cloak & Dagger weekly party on Tuesday nights in Los Angeles to cater to the more sophisticated, “darker side of nightlife.”
From a members-only weekly party in 2015, Cloak & Dagger grew into Cloak & Dagger : Dusk Til Dawn in 2017, a 2-day festival featuring headliners Jesus and Mary Chain, and KMFDM. Cloak & Dagger also have monthly events in Chicago and Mexico City, and have big plans for spring 2019, including expanding to other cities including London. While the music curation for these special events runs the gamut from pop to hip-hop to electronic and post-punk, they all share a dark edge that connects them across genres, attracting an audience that is similarly eclectic. Despite the emphasis on the darker side of things, Cloak & Dagger events are all about positive vibes and good energy. As with Cloak & Dagger’s weekly members-only parties, an all-black dress code is strongly encouraged. Guests are also expected to respect everyone’s personal space and to not go anywhere uninvited.
Returning to recreate Cloak & Dagger’s magical, experiential world will be award-winning writer/director Annie Lesser, an expert in immersive and interactive performance. She will be joined by visual designer Adam LaBay, who most recently created the lighting and laser effects for Childish Gambino’s acclaimed Saturday Night Live performance. Together, they will craft the subliminally immersive environment that is the trademark of Cloak & Dagger’s weekly parties. “Annie started working with Cloak & Dagger in the very beginning of the weekly club. She has since become a well known, award winning writer/director. She wrote everything for the ‘Cloak & Dagger: Dusk Till Dawn Festival’ last year,” says Adam Bravin. “I feel like a lot of festivals are trying to do more immersive stuff, but they're just brushing the surface,” Annie said in 2017. “Having a music festival have its own story really feels like something that makes it stand out.” Guests will have access to two types of experiences: exclusive one-on-one storylines and a more subtle narrative, requiring guests to pay close attention to their surroundings in order to participate. Especially chosen guests will be led into experiences at any moment. Hidden stories and narratives add even more mystery to the experience.
This is the level of experience that fans and members of Cloak & Dagger have come to expect, in addition to a roster stacked with amazing bands and DJ Adam 12’s genre-busting dark set. “After the success of Cloak & Dagger : Dusk Till Dawn in 2017, we are so excited to continue our relationship with Spaceland Presents and Restless Nites and offer our next collaboration in November of 2018,” says Bravin. “Together with Brian Tarney (RN) as well as Liz Garo and Mitchell Frank (SP) we’ve come up with a very special lineup for this show on November 10th at The State Theater, DTLA.”
