Helen Simpson, Specialist NHS Dietitian at Treloars school and college (for mentally and physically disabled children)Member of DISC – specialist group of British Dietetic Association.

Feeding the child with special needs: The hurdles and how to jump them.

Helen’s unique experience as both a food teacher and dietitian means she is well placed to present the Multidisciplinary work at Treloars which forms the basis of all student support.  The multidisciplinary team will include clinical therapists, teachers and residential house staff.  Keeping the students physically healthy enables them to access education and the opportunities available to them. Eating and drinking well and maintaining an adequate nutritional intake is fundamental to their health and well-being. They aim to make eating a social and fun experience whilst ensuring that individual needs are met. Working with students with special needs is hugely rewarding, the results are easy to see and is equipping them with an awareness of food and nutrition which they can take through life with them.

Claire Frogley, Greenfields Specialist School for Communication, Northamptonshire

Claire will share ideas on equipment and adaptions she uses in food lessons

Claire follows the Licence to Cook programme for students at KS3, with KS4 options in cooking, craft and other courses. At KS5 students are offered OCR accredited catering as an option as part of a consortium of activities at the school and a selection of other special schools.

Sarah Badzire, Clare Mount Specialist Sports College, Wirral (11 to 19 with moderate learning difficulties and additional needs such as autism), 304 students on roll.

The school has an outstanding reputation and every student is treated as an individual whilst being encouraged to be an active and positive member of the school community and a global citizen. Happy and motivated students will achieve and the safe, caring and supportive ethos enables them to succeed in their learning, regardless of their disabilities.

This ethos is embedded into the Food Studies department, where Sarah encourages pupils to take part in activities such as catering for the many visitors to the school, making lunches and celebratory treats for staff and pupils. This all helps to reinforce their practical skills, but most importantly, build their self confidence and self belief and foster a "can do" attitude with pupils and their parents alike.

All food lessons are structured to:

·         Unlock barriers to learning

·         Open up ways to communicate

·         Develop social skills

·         Encourage and support pupils and their families to make informed and positive food choices by understanding how food has a function and purpose as part of healthy life choices

Also with

Eleanor Constable, Westhaven Special school, North Somerset

Hannah Shaw, Ass Headteacher Key Stage 3 Aldermann Knight School

Hannah will share use of ICT for supporting special schools pupils in food lessons
