Hello! I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July holiday! I have been concerned lately with people (note brokers) who have been calling and emailing me about how poorly the economy is doing and why can't they get more deals closed and how come my deals are always getting cancelled due to low appraisals. To be honest with you, I prefer to distance myself from the negativity.

The note business is a big numbers game.  The more you do it, the more deals will eventually get closed, the more your pipeline will be filled and the more confident you will be in the business.  For me I think it has a little to do with each person's self esteem. A person with poor self esteem usually gravitates towards the negative.  A person with good self esteem usually gravitates towards the positive.  So this month I'd like to share with you some thoughts on the self esteem of a note broker/buyer in today's note industry.

Self esteem is a perception about how we see ourselves, how we view others viewing us, and a group of ideas about how we should be in life.  Our self esteem is a collection of thoughts that is a combination of how we grew up with our parents, family members, school, friends, relatives and experiences.

No matter what happened to you or what your experiences have been, you are responsible for how you want to be in the world.  There is no fairness in life, as you would all attest to, so now it is time to take some steps to build your own self esteem and build your note business from the ground up.  In order to construct a strong building (a strong note business), you must have a strong foundation.  The stronger the base the higher the pyramid can go.

Here are 10 things that you can start to do to help construct a healthy positive self (as adapted from Dr Elliot Goldstein, a licensed clinical psychologist), that will in turn help construct a healthy positive note business.  Remember, in order to continue to build your self esteem and your note business you must practice and possibly re-teach yourselves these things.

1) Lay the Foundation - Decide today how you want to be and say something positive.

2) Take Charge of your personal construction site - Say or do one assertive thing today.

3) Remove a Barrier - Do or say something to someone that you have been wanting to do or say for awhile, but you have put it off.

4) Make a Plan with your family or friends; don't wait for someone else to make the plans.

5) Add Flexibility to your structure. - Buildings survive earthquakes because they bend.  Rigid buildings break.

6) Have an Open floor plan.  If you are positive to new ideas, then it will give you a fresh outlook.

7) Have good internal and external feng shui - Smile - Go with the flow of the day.  Plans will always change.

8) As the Builder - Tell people what you want.  It is not selfish to be kind to yourself.

9) Accept your Imperfections - Everyone likes different appliances and different structures for different reasons.  One is not necessarily better than another.  Appreciate your differences.

10) Keep Building your self esteem - Every day brings something new and different.  Only you can make it happen.

So during the slow summer months in the note business, take some time every day to work on building your self esteem.  Try and keep it positive. Everyday.  It will be good for you, good for your business and good for the note industry in the long run. That's it for this month, have a great July! Keep on marketing, it's going to work! TWITA!
