Happy New Year!

At the beginning of a new year, we can look back on a creative and succesful 2015. It has been a rollercoaster of exciting projects worldwide. From large sculptures to inspiring solo-exhibitions, we explored new possibilities and created innovative sculptures. And in the future we will continue to investigate new materials and techniques to renew the tradition of sculpture.

This search for new possibilities already resulted in the creation of some exciting new work. In various exhibitions around the world, such as Vormidable Den Haag, Ars Electronica Linz and Laboral Gijon, visitors were able to discover how our work questions the relationship between art, architecture, applied sciences and digital design. With EGNOABER and REWAUTAL, we had the chance to install our first monumental sculptures abroad. Next to that, we also installed several commissioned works across the country, such as TIEBLOY and the colourful courtyard TUOHREM. To complete our year, we launched a new website, with a new design and a lot of new features to discover.

We've shared a few of our 2015 highlights below. The future looks even more promising, and we look forward to another year full of exciting and groundbreaking projects. We hope to see you along the way!

All the best for 2016,

Sweet 18 - Ursel, BE

50 contemporary artists offering a new perspective on life in the 18th century. That was the main idea of this exhibition, that took place at the wonderful castle at Ursel. Nick Ervinck's strawberry sculptures NABEKIESAV and NABEKIEARTS fitted well into this concept. Utopian, almost surreal strawberries seem to grow from the vases, being held together by a skeleton. The sculptures are directly influenced by 18th century flamboyant Meissen vases that are lavishly decorated with plants, animals and creatures that seem more beautiful than their originals in the natural world. While this porcelain is a testament to great craftsmanship, it also has an absurd side: a combination that Ervinck strongly admires.

Vormidable - Den Haag, NL

Last summer, Museum Beelden aan Zee focused on contemporary Flemish sculpture. The impulse for the theme was the celebration of 20 years of cultural cooperation between the Netherlands and Flanders in 2015. The exhibition has been compiled by the Flemish curator Stef van Bellingen.

ENNERLEI and ENNERNEISE

For these trophies, designed for the bicycle races Gent-Wevelgem and the National Championships in the Netherlands, Nick Ervinck plays with the tension between tradition and innovation, between the linear and the organic. The sculptures represent the hard battle the riders have to endure during the race. Speed and dynamics are portrayed in a futuristic way, resulting in two trophies that represent the characteristics of the race, but also convey a certain elegance.

EGNOABER - Emmen, NL

Since july 2015, a seven meter high sculpture highlights the central square in the city Emmen, located in the north of the Netherlands. This whimsical sculpture looks like a runaway tree, an odd skeleton or a dead and abstract body, which has been recovered by tho organic, fluid and vivid yellow texture. It makes us think of the kienstobbe, a typical tree root for this region. EGNOABER refers to both natural erosion processes and to the visual language of an artefact (the shiny and colourful varnish).

The sculpture is placed on top of a parking entrance building. By this the sculpture and the building add value to each other. the building becomes the pedestal of the sculpture, while the sculpture makes the parking entrance more attractive.

Elements of Art and Science - Linz, AT

The 'Elements of Art and Science' exhibition includes several outstanding works that demonstrate the varied approaches and methods artists use when dealing with scientific subjects. Establishing interconnections among diverse fields of knowledge provides access to alternatieve perspectives and can foster the emergence of ideas for new developments.

TUOHREM - Meerhout, BE

TUOHREM is a recent artwork at the courtyard of the new retirement home in Meerhout, Belgium. At this courtyard, the inhabitants seem to dwell in an enormous painting. TUOHREM is in fact like a 'floorpainting' that spreads to all corners of the square. This unique visual language reminds us of a pebble that creates a series of waves in the survace of the water. Nick Ervinck integrates the benches in a unity of flowing, organic colored patches.

GNI-RI sep2015 - Emmen, NL

On the occasion of the new sculpture EGNOABER at the Raadhuisplein in Emmen, Nick Ervinck was invited by the Centrum Beeldende Kunst Emmen to organize a solo-exhibition. It proved to be a succesful project, providing an extensive overview of Nick Ervinck's work until now. Accompaning the exhibition, he painted a unique monumental wall painting, inspired by his blob-like sculptures like IKRAUSIM and NIEBLOY.

REWAUTAL - ES

This monumental sculpture, commissioned by a private collector, is the result of a digital designing process, but hevertheless realised by hand, using polyester. The digital design language is clear in the fluid, vivid lines of the sculpture, creating a unique dynamic. Nick Ervinck questions how the computer can be used in the realisation of new, organic and experimental (negative) spaces and sculptures within sculptures. With sculptures like REWAUTAL, Nick Ervinck thus builds on the heritage of artists like Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.

OLNETOP - Middelkerke, BE

OLNETOP is a monumental sculpture that was designed for Beaufort 04 in 2012. It consists of irregular, organic forms and refers to the power of water. OLNETOP has something monstrous, a hybrid formulation in which we can recognize various elements. The imagery used is clearly inspired by macro photographic images of splashing water, and thus sculpturally interprets the encounter between nature and technology. After three years in Bredene, the work was recently moved to the coastline of Middelkerke, where it will be part of a large sculpture park.

Materia Prima - Gijon, ES

This exhibition investigates the strong relationship between art and science, a synthesis that seems logical in our present society that is dominated by technology and innovation. Materia Prima is an attempt to create access, to blaze trails into the vast overlapping territories of art and science. It is precisely this investigation that fascinates Nick Ervinck. His artwork explores the boundaries between various media, and questions how art can develop due to new materials and techniques.
