WHAT DOES AN ICE CREAM SCOOPER HAVE TO DO WITH AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY?

Alfred L. Cralle was an African American inventor who lived in Pittsburgh. He patented his design for the Ice Cream Mold on Feb. 2, 1897,patent # 576395. His mechanical device (better known as an ice cream scooper) keeps ice cream from sticking as it is being served. The basic design of Cralle's ice cream mold was so ingenious that it is still in use today! By entering this contest, you can learn about other great African American product designers, engineers and inventors.

YOUR ENTRY MUST ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING QUESTION:
*What African American product designer, engineer, or inventor do you admire and why? How has that person impacted society?

*The contest is open to anyone 6 through 18 who lives in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Washington & Westmoreland Counties.
*Your essay must be no more than 500 words.
*Your entry must be postmarked by March 12, 2010.
*Include the Title, your Name and Age on the first page of your essay.
*Staple the Entry form to the front of your essay.
*Complete all required information on the Entry Form and include it with your entry.
*The individual you select to write about can be living or deceased.


For bonus points, you can submit poetry, art, music or video along with your essay. Follow the guidelines below or submission of these materials. Your composition MUST NOT include Violence, Profanity or Adult content of any kind.
Your entry becomes the property of Bynums and will not be returned.

OPTIONAL BONUS POINTS
You must submit an essay to enter this contest. You also have the option of including any one (1) of the following for bonus points: Poetry - Poem must be no longer than 40 lines. Art - The dimensions of your artwork must be no larger than 16"x20". Two-dimensional artwork accepted only. (Sculptures or three-dimensional art will NOT be accepted.) Do not send framed artwork. Music - All music and lyrics submitted must be original. Your composition must be submitted must be original. Your composition must be submitted as an audio CD only. Video - The length of your video MUST NOT exceed five minutes. Your entry must be submitted as a DVD or VHS tape. Pictures - You can include pictures related to your essay.
