This is a must see film. An African-American gospel choir goes to Palestine to sing in a Palestinian play about the American civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. While there, they become witnesses to life under Israeli occupation but also to the inspiring Palestinian non-violent movement against Israel's illegal occupation and apartheid policies. Having won the "Best South African Film" award at the recent Encounters Documentary Film Festival, this is another must see movie by the Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Mark Kaplan and Cape Town based Jewish scholar, Heidi Grunebaum. The film explores the role of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) in building the "South Africa Forest" over the Israeli-destroyed Palestinian village of Lubya (destroyed by Israeli forces in 1948, during the Palestinian "Nakba"). The JNF is celebrated by Israel and its supporters for its forest building work, however, the JNF is also increasingly criticized by human rights activists for its involvement in the Israeli oppression and "ethnic-cleansing" of the indigenous Palestinian people, and specifically the construction of controversial "forests" above Israeli-destroyed Palestinian villages in an attempt to erase traces of Palestinian life. "Cinema Jenin" tells the story of a German filmmaker and two Palestinians who, with the help of a few big names (including Roger Waters of Pink Floyd and Bianca Jagger the ex-wife of Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger) restore a once popular Palestinian movie theater. This year's 11th "Tri-Continental Film Festival", taking place in South Africa between the 13th and 29th of September 2013, will feature three award-winning Palestine movies. Tickets can be purchased at the festival, however, in addition, the organizers of the festival have also made available free complimentary tickets to supporters of BDS South Africa for the three Palestine movies (email events@bdssouthafrica.com to receive a complimentary BDS South Africa ticket). PALESTINIAN POET, REMI KANAZI, TO TOUR SOUTH AFRICA AS PART OF THE TRI-CONTINENTAL FILM FESTIVAL

The celebrated New York based Palestinian poet, spoken-word artist, activist and author, Remi Kanazi, will be in South Africa between the 17th and 25th of September as a guest of the "Tri-Continental Film Festival" (TCFF). Kanazi will be a speaker at several of the TCFF screenings and will also do public performances, presentations and talks with BDS South Africa and our partner organizations at community venues in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria and Soweto. A full schedule with all Remi Kanazi's upcoming events in South Africa will be published and distributed shortly.
