L.A. WORKS DAY, FEATURING:
GRAFFITI MURALIST, RAUL GONZALEZ

After painting and planting at three Cypress Park neighborhood schools, removing graffiti, painting murals, and planting along the main Figueroa corridor, L.A. Works Day volunteers will gather together for an exciting lunchtime celebration!  The celebration includes: a free lunch provided by Cinnamon Vegetarian Restaurant, a local restaurant specializing in full-flavored Vegetarian and Vegan Latin American cuisine; a performance by Gustavo Galindo, a passionate singer/songwriter signed with Surco/Univeral Latino; and a nonprofit community resource fair.
Additionally, Executive Art Director and co-founder of Mictlan Murals, Raul Gonzalez, will be featured as he creates a graffiti art mural on the side of the Antigua Coffee House.Gonzalez was born and raised in the Aliso Village housing projects in Boyle Heights, California.
Although primarily self taught, he has formal art training from Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts, East Los Angeles College, and Mural Restoration training through the Social and Public Art Resource Center.

During the late 1980's, Gonzalez began painting with spray paint, his influence was the mid-1980's emerging underground graffiti movement and the gang culture in Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles. In 1991, Gonzalez began his work in community revitalization through art with the Los Angeles Conservation Crops. Through these efforts he gained knowledge and understanding of the social conditions affecting young people in two of the most economically neglected, under resourced, working class and immigrant communities of Los Angeles-East L.A. and Boyle Heights.

Gonzalez believes that by investing and producing images that reflects a community's cultural uniqueness, history and positive representation of youth, families and community members that it will have a greater chance to educate, exhibit safe and healthy lifestyles and in return the community will look after it, protect it and have ownership of their community and its murals.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT:
ALEXA BENSON'S 15TH L.A. WORKS DAY
Although Alexa was trained to sing classical music and opera, her career path took a sharp turn when she shifted her focus to nursing. Now, as a nurse practitioner in a level 1 trauma center, Alexa is taking care of people who do not have health insurance. She is also a forensic nurse for people who have been sexually assaulted.
Alexa shared a few insights on who she is and why she does what she does with us for this spotlight piece:

Q: Why do you volunteer?
A: Our society is a reflection of how we work together. If you leave someone to fend for themselves, it shows how disconnected we all are – which is why I am always trying to connect with others to show we're not alone. We all have the need to feel like we're a part of the world. My way is to give back and interact with others. In such a huge city, it is difficult to find people to share doing good but volunteering brings people together to be active and get a warm fuzzy feeling.

Q: Why have you continued to stay involved with L.A. Works Day for so long?
A: I enjoy volunteering as a Project Leader on L.A. Works Day because of the camaraderie of the core leaders – who are well organized and motivated. We all have clicked and knew if we had each other, we could make L.A. Works Day… work.

Q: What have you enjoyed in particular about L.A. Works?
A: I have learned so much! From dry walling to tiling to painting, I have picked up some interesting skills. Plus, volunteering has helped with my leadership skills as well as helped me become even more confident in my ability to organize things.

Q: What do you like to do in your "spare" time?
A: Beyond volunteering, I also like to cook and to travel. It is fun to create trips to take with friends!
(NOTE: while interviewing Alexa for this, she was packing for a trip to Paris!!)

SPECIAL APPEARANCE BY PETER FACINELLI:
MAKE A CLEAN DIFFERENCE EVENT
With L.A. Works’ help, Bounty® teamed up with husband-and-wife duo Peter Facinelli and Jennie Garth, along with volunteers from the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation to “Make a Clean Difference” at Los Angeles’ Kingsley Elementary School.

Answering the call from President Obama for Americans to volunteer in the community, Bounty’s “Make a Clean Difference” program is uniting more than 1,000 volunteers to transform the learning environments of 30 public schools in 10 cities across the country.

Additional Los Angeles schools receiving a helping-hand from community volunteers include Aragon Elementary and Loreto Elementary on June 12th for L.A. Works Day of Service.
Maintaining clean learning environments and providing volunteer services are the crux of Bounty’s “Make a Clean Difference” program.  Research has shown a link between the cleanliness of school facilities and students’ academic achievements. For photos of the day: www.facebook.com/laworks
