Next week we are being treated to an eveing of images from our own John Chamberlin, John will be presenting an evening called 'From Dawn to Dusk'. He will be showing a collection of largely new images taken since his last talk two years ago. As usual, there will be a wide variety of subjects with hopefully something to interest everyone. By way of a change, the second half will be put to music thanks to the help of Andrew Marker. The cost of this is as yet unknown, as his invoice is still awaited!
John has been a prolific photographer for nearly 40 years. He gained the Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1984 and the Fellowship the following year. Until December 2009 he was a member of the RPS Travel Distinctions Panel and

Chair of the Visual Art Panel. He has also served on the RPS Nature Panel. He was a member of the RPS Distinctions Advisory Board and the Fellowship Board as well as Chair of the Multimedia and Narrative Panel. In 2008 he was awarded the Fenton Medal and Honorary Membership of the RPS for services to the Society. As well as belonging to the London Salon, he is a member of Arena and President of the Zoological Photo Club; membership of each is by invitation.
His images have been exhibited extensively in Britain and in various countries around the world gaining many awards and he has also acted as a selector at countless national and international exhibitions. His AFIAP and EFIAP were gained in the nineteen eighties and his MFIAP in 2007.
He works mainly in colour with his current images being captured digitally. In his own words he is essentially a 'photographer', rather than a digital artist. He tries to get everything 'right' at the taking stage!! As well as pictorial and creative work and images taken on worldwide travels, he is an extremely active nature photographer with a particular love for Africa, a continent he has visited nearly thirty times. |
Closing Date - Projected Image Competition
|
Next week (21 February) is the closing date for Round 4 of the Projected Image Competition. There is a change to the published judge, Sandie Cox is unable to make it and Leigh Preston has agreed to step in at short notice. Leigh is well known at BPS and we can expect a masterclass in judging. |
This weekend we will be judging the Bristol Salon, when 10,000+ images will be whittled down to about 2,500 accepted images. If you are interested in seeing how an international exhibition is selected, or want to see if you can catch your own images going through, you are welcome to visit us. We will be judging Friday through to Sunday from about 10am to 5pm each day, with judging taking place in the main clubroom on all three days and also upstairs on Saturday and Sunday. Below is a picture of the clubroom in readiness to to start the marathon.

If anything is unclear or there are any questions then please get in touch with the Exhibition Secretary by email at mpix@wcpf.org.uk

Painswick Rococco Gardens - Famous for their Snowdrop displays, they are delighted to confirm that the snowdrops are now looking at their very best, after weeks of anticipation. The main Snowdrop Grove is in full flower, with their own famous "Galanthus Atkinsii" attracting particular comment at the moment. Depending on the weather, the snowdrop display is likely to be looking good until the end of February. If you're planning a visit later in the month, do check back or keep an eye on our social media feeds for updates. The cold and dry weather is good, as this slows down the snowdrops' growth and means a longer display! Full details here.

Swaps: Photographs from the David Hurn Collection. Until 15 April at the National Museum, Cardiff. This exhibition celebrates the major gift of photographs from David Hurn’s private collection and marks the opening of Amgueddfa Cymru’s first gallery dedicated to photography. Throughout his career as a documentary photographer and member of Magnum Photos, Hurn has been an avid collector of photography. Remarkably, he has amassed his private collection by swapping works with other photographers. The collection comprises approximately 700 photographs by leading 20th and 21st century photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eve Arnold, Sergio Larrain, Bill Brandt, Martine Franck, Bruce Davidson and Martin Parr, through to emerging photographers such as Bieke Depoorter, Clementine Schneidermann, and Newsha Tavakolian. The exhibition presents a selection of works that reflect on Hurn’s own career and influences, his eye for a good photograph and the friendships he has developed with photographers along the way. ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP

Well done to John Hudson who is now an SPSA: Silver - Photographic Society of America, which is awarded for a portfolio of of fifteen images, which in John's case was called Performance. Below are two of the images from John's portfolio:
Well done also to Greg Duncan who has just received confirmation that his application for the second portfolio level in the PSA has been successful and that his BPSA has been replaced with SPSA. Whereas other people have achieved this level before him, he is the first person in the PSA to have achieved a portfolio distinction with 3D images.
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
