Can we Help ?
This
is a picture of my lovely old ferry "as found" in about 1974.
The after
part of the hull had been crudely decked over, for use I was told, as a
Scotland Island goods barge. I have always wanted to discover something
of its origin, even the name would be nice. Is there any chance, anyone
could help with a bit of marine history? It had a Thornycroft engine
and a massive bronze rudder. The shaft was supported by a cast bronze A
frame. Dimensions were, I think, 30' x 6'6", with a round
bilge,
the hull was planked with teak on spotted gum ribs.
I should
add that I did an enormous amount of work making a complete new
foredeck, planked in beech, paid with oakum and filled with pitch,
followed by jacking up the cabin structure and preparing new supporting
knees. After some engine work I discovered that the thing had been left
empty of (salt) cooling water for too long and the cylinder head
gradually developed a mass of irreparable cracks as the impregnated
salt crystals formed and expanded. Formation of a new business taking
precedence about then, I sold it.
