PAW Video

Please watch and share

PAW Ireland (the Partnership for Action against Wildlife Crime) have launched a beautifully animated but terrifying video to highlight the reality of wildlife crime and the state of the natural world in Ireland.

PAW Ireland brings together statutory agencies, non-statutory agencies and interested parties with the common goal of combating wildlife crime through publicity, education and campaigning.

 WILDLIFE CRIME
Convicting people of wildlife crimes is extremely difficult and time consuming, so each month we're going to draw your attention to interesting cases (both old and new).

Wildlife Crime Prosecution: NPWS

The Irish Hare is a protected species everywhere in Ireland but if someone goes hare hunting in a nature reserve it looks particularly bad. Patrick Berry of Wexford Town pleaded guilty to a charge of illegally hunting a hare with dogs at Wexford North Slob on 28 August 2019, in breach of Section 23.5.b of the Wildlife Acts.

Judge John Cheatle imposed a custodial sentence of three months, suspended for twelve months, while noting that this was the second time that the defendant was before the court for illegally hunting hares on the North Slob.

Minister Noonan said in a comment to the ruling: “Wildlife crime at a time of a biodiversity crisis is unacceptable and I would urge the public to report suspected incidents to relevant authorities."
