Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 24 March
Next week is the highlight of the BPS calendar (well, I would say that, wouldn't I) when we get the chance to see the 2021 Bristol International Salon of Photography. You will see the cream of what was an entry of over 12,600 images submitted this year in six sections: Open, Monochrome, Nature, Creative, Scapes and Action. The presentation will comprise all the award-winning images plus a selection of the remaining accepted images, all put to a suitable musical accompaniment by Andrew Marker and his small band of dedicated helpers, Ashwin Chauhan and Steve Field. This is your chance to see some of the best images in the world, so don't miss it!

Thanks to John Hudson for this slightly modified portrait of Cardinal Wolsey by Holbein. Presumably this is the next step on the FIAP ladder after EFIAP/d3

GB Cup - Successes for BPS

From the desk of the External Competiton Secretary.

Thanks everyone for supporting the above competitions – this delayed competition was judged over the weekend and concluded yesterday. I’m pleased to pass on the results.

Note: Scores are for the 12 highest scoring images.

GB Cup for Nature.

BPS came a very creditable 5th out of 104 clubs with a score of 151

A special mention should go to Graham & Mary Pears, Ralph Snook, Mike Hall, and Richard Kay for each having one image (Graham 2) included in the exhibition to follow on-line?

GB Cup (Open)

BPS were placed equal 15th out of 120 clubs with a score of 145

Only one image was singled out for inclusion in the exhibition, Die De Groot by Jeff Hargreaves.

Once again – well done everyone.   Keep taking pictures and hopefully we can improve on these rankings next year.

In the meantime, we still have the print competitions to look forward to once they work out how to judge these safely.

Lee Filters Update

The latest update from Lee Filters:

Subject: LEE Associated Clubs - News Letter MARCH 2021

Dear associated club members.

Firstly many thanks to all of you who took time to view our first Ambassador talk with Justin Minns, and those who have booked intro talks and filter talks with myself.

As we head through March and into April we hope you are all looking forward to getting back out as the restrictions (hopefully) ease. Our thoughts are with you in the hope of brighter times ahead and some re-growth in your ranks over the rest of 2021.

I have received many requests regarding visits to the factory and physical workshops for later in the year. At present these are all still very much on the drawing board, pending suitable results with regards to lockdown easing and the course of the pandemic in general, so please bear with us. I am of course happy to take any requests and put them on file for the time being.

Moving on: I am pleased to attach the latest MARCH clubs newsletter for you to forward onto your members.

In this month’s issue we have :

  1. Effects Filters with Mark Bauer. (Video)
  2. A special exclusive discount on Jeremy walkers new book LANDSCAPE.
  3. A discount link to Photoguard Camera Insurance.
  4. The importance of foreground subjects with Mark Denny (Video)
  5. Details of a new full Zoom Presentation (Welcome to the World of Filters) which covers use of filters across multiple genre’s such as Street, landscape, portrait, architecture, and macro etc and is available to book free of charge for your club. This talk is designed to be delivered on a per club basis to allow for more interactive Q&A. (this will also be sent on a separate email just in case it gets missed)
  6. An Invite to our next monthly Ambassador talk featuring Verity Milligan - Re-imagining the City: Exploring Urban Landscapes a video link will be sent out afterwards to all clubs for those who can't attend.
  7. Links to the previous News letter and resources.
  8. Links to the Free Lee Exposure Magazine and other useful links.

Kind regards,

Simon Garratt

Trumpet Blowers' Corner

Well done to Barry Mead on gaining 2 acceptances including a FIAP Gold medal in the recent International Salon of New York.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Make Money For BPS Every Time You Shop On Amazon!
Now we're all still in lockdown, the thought of on-line shopping must be looming large in many members' minds. It's worth remembering that if you so wish, each and every one of you can support BPS with every purchase you make on Amazon by using Amazon Smile. Click on the link below – then it’s self-explanatory.
Shopping using Smile is no different to your normal Amazon shopping and costs you nothing, it's just that you need to tell it that you wish to use Smile and then we get some pennies!

For Sale

I have received the following from Steve Field:

My daughter has recently announced she is retiring from competitive gymnastics which means I cannot justify hanging on to my Canon 7D Mk II and battery grip to cover her international comps which (now) won't happen :-(

I would like it to go to a good home so BPS gets a look in before ebay.  What is on offer is the following:

  • Canon 7D MkII +BG16 Battery Grip - Both Boxed
  • 2 No Canon LP E6N Batteries
  • Canon Battery Charger
  • Canon Strap and the bits that came in the boxes
  • SanDisk CF Cards - 2x16Gb Extreme and 3x8Gb Extreme
  • SanDisk SD Cards - 2x32Gb Extreme Pro

I cannot tell you exactly how many shutter activations it has - can't get the info out of it!,  What I can say is that there are 6579 images in my Lightroom Catalogue and I have deleted approx 12,000 images taken over 4 years of other gymnasts at various competitions.

I would like £750 -  Negotiation is expected.  I have seen just the bodies only go for between £600 and £700 on ebay so I think I am being realistic but I'll let you guys be the judge of that.

Contact me on progsec@bristolphoto.org.uk if you are interested.

If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).
