January 17, 2011 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. This milestone coincides with a local, personal milestone for us… L.A. Works 20th anniversary. As we honor Dr. King’s legacy through service, we look out to 2011 with great hope and anticipation. To meet today's challenges and move ourselves closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community, we need a new generation of citizens to take action.

What's Your New Year's Resolution?
What if you pledged a few spare moments to LA? What if we all did? Make your pledge to those who need it the most… your neighbors, your community, friends and family, and yourself! Here's an official pledge form from L.A. Works. Or you can sign up online to volunteer at www.LAWorks.com. And if time just seems too tight to try to commit, consider making a donation to support our 20th year in service to LA. Your support and generosity in any form is always appreciated.

Building L.A. Works' Leaders
L.A. Works is teaming with Dale Carnegie to offer a variety of free workshop for our volunteers in 2011.  These workshops will cover topics like how to Network through community service, Balance work, life, and service, and Communicate with different personality styles as a service from L.A. Works to our community as part of our 2011 partnership with Dale Carnegie. Keep an eye on our facebook page and/or tweets for forthcoming announcements.

MLK: More Ways to Make it a "Day On"

Additional ways to get involved
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" We are proud that our response is our mobilization of you, our friends and community members, to serve their neighbors and communities. If L.A. Works' signature event isn't quite what you're looking for, click to find additional volunteer opportunities occurring throughout the city on or around the MLK Jr. holiday. MORE>>>

Used Laptop and Children's Book Drive
Because many computers in the Rosemont Elementary School classrooms do not work well, the teachers are unable to include technology in their curriculum. They would like to incorporate laptops in their classrooms to use for classroom instruction and student use. A volunteer corporate IT team will assess the laptops during the event and install as many as possible in each classroom. Unused laptops will be recycled.  MORE>>>

Project Leader Training
At every L.A. Works managed project, volunteers are greeted by an L.A. Works Project Leader who leads them in meaningful service. Project Leaders are responsible for developing engaging and creative project activities, maintaining a good relationship with their nonprofit partner, communicating with volunteers leading up to the project and leading them on the day-of to maximize impact and ensure that they have a meaningful experience.

Skill-Based Volunteering
