Hello Firstname

Wednesday 14 November
Next week we welcome Kirsteen Titchener LSWPP, who will be presenting her talk called From Psychologist to Photographic Artist.
The following is from Kirsteen:
The last decade has taken me from cognitive psychologist through to photographic artist. I still explore the human mind in much of my work but now I do so visually not through experimentation or the written word. The purchase of a DSLR ten years ago started out as a hobby for my husband and me, but became much more central to my life than I ever expected.

I wasn’t totally hooked in those early days, with awkward tripods and heavy bags putting me off. However, discovering a trial copy of Photoshop led me down a rabbit hole of learning and creativity that I didn’t see coming. I’ll share who has inspired me along the way and resources I’ve found useful (all my post processing work is self-taught). My work itself is often inspired by observation of my own life or the impact of our modern world more broadly. There will be a little on the thought processes behind an image, details of the shoot and some post processing, why I choose to create composites, and why I shoot self-portraits. I’ll also share how I’ve tried to build a CV worthy of gallery representation and other business challenges associated with selling art and photography in an ever-changing market place.

DI Group
All BPS members are invited to the DI Group meeting next Monday, 12 November. As usual, if you have images you would like to show to the rest of the group, either to show what you have been doing recently or have questions to ask others please bring them along. You can bring your images either in print form or on a memory stick for projection (as JPG files of any size, sRGB colour space and in a folder of your name).

DI Emu challenge - don't forget to bring the results of your skilled efforts to cut out the emu from the background. Details were published in the last newsletter. I already have one entry submitted. It would be interesting to see how others have tackled the challenge. If you can't come on Monday, you can send in your entry to me (a.chauhan@blueyonder.co.uk). Prize for best results - extra special chocolate biscuits. Details of the challenge and the image can be found by following this dropbox link - but you'll have to hurry!

We hope to have a demo on selected topics in Lightroom this month by Andrew Whettam. Nearly half the members in the society use Lightroom and it should be interesting to all, especially those who subscribe to Lightroom CC but do not use it. Andrew hopes to give an overview of importing files, catalogues, collections and talk about editing multiple files, synchronising settings and creating pre-sets. It is quite a lot to cover in one session and Andrew will cover as much as he can this time and do the rest in the next meeting whenever he is available to share his expertise with the group.

Studio
The next studio group will be for beginners in studio work and will be held in the morning Saturday 24 November. This session is aimed at those new to studio work or unfamiliar with the studio equipment and will show how to correctly and safely set up the studio so that members will feel confident to book the studio for their own use if they wish. There will be a limit of 6 photographers for a 2hr session starting at 10.30am. A model will be booked and to cover this cost there will be a charge of between £10 and £15.

To Sign up for this, please visit the doodle poll – click here. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis and Nick will close the poll when enough photographers have signed up. It’s important that once you have signed up for the event that you add a comment to include your email address and mobile number, this will enable Nick to contact you to make final arrangements.

Print Workers - Advanced Warning
The closing date for the next round of the Print Competition is just 2 weeks away, 21 November. The theme for the prescribed category in the Advanced section is Dereliction/Decay (a group shot of BPS Council will not be acceptable!). The judge for this round will be Vince Penticost from South Wales.

Unit 13 News
As you will no doubt know, we try to maximise the use of the clubrooms, partly to make sure that it is well used and partly to act as an additional revenue stream for the Society. This week has been no exception, having been used over the weekend by the Disabled Photographers Society (DPS) for their distinctions assessments and on Monday by Wex for one of their workshops, in this case Wild Arena photographing small reptiles.

Lumberjack Required!
You will, no doubt have seen the scaffolding on both Units 12 & 13; this has been to allow for essential maintenance work to be carried out on the guttering. Having now spent all this money, we don't want to have to keep clearing the gutters out because they become blocked with leaves from the trees behind both units. Mike Bigger and I have cleared away several of the trees at the back, but there is still one big b*gger that was beyond the capabilities of our bow-saw. Is there anyone in the club who would be willing to help reduce the height of the tree to bring it down to a more manageable height? What would be ideal, would be someone with one of those chain saws on a long reach handle.

Please let me know if you can help, bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk or 07706 868638 .

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
