Sacred Springs Powwow just days away!

A thirty-two-foot tipi, archeological displays, White Shaman Panel lectures, screening of the award-winning film Yakona, and amazing dancers will be highlighted at the 2014 Sacred Springs Powwow that celebrates the Native American culture that has been part of the San Marcos area for thousands of years. The powwow is set for Saturday, October 11, 2014 from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM at the new Meadows Center (formerly known as Aquarena Center), 201 San Marcos Springs Drive, San Marcos, Texas.

The event is funded by the San Marcos Arts Commission, the Tomblin Family Foundation, Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas State University Environmental Services Committee, Rancho Deluxe in Wimberley, Heritage Association of San Marcos, Awesmic City Expo 2015, and sponsors include Texas State University, Skyline Entertainment & Party Bus Co., and Affordable Golf Carts.

The powwow schedule and more information on the event can be found on our website, HERE.

PARKING & SHUTTLES:

Visitors can park in the parking lots on both sides of Bobcat Stadium, located across the street from the powwow grounds.  Shuttle buses will pick up visitors and transport them to the powwow grounds, running every 15 minutes. For a map of the parking areas, CLICK HERE.  This year the City of San Marcos is providing two trolleys and Skyline Party Bus Co. is providing one bus for shuttle services.

Shuttles will start at 9:30 AM to pick up visitors who want to attend the 10:00 AM blessing ceremony on the shores of the sacred springs, next to the powwow grounds.

DISABLED VISITORS:

There are a limited number of disabled parking spaces inside the powwow grounds, however these become filled quickly.  If you are disabled, your driver can take you to the powwow grounds where you can disembark; the driver will then take the car to the Bobcat Stadium parking and take a shuttle back to the powwow grounds to join you.

DANCERS PARKING AND DRESSING TENTS:

Dancers can drive into the powwow grounds and unload their gear and regalia next to our two Dancers Tents.  The gear and regalia will be guarded by one of our volunteers, while the dancers drive their vehicles to Bobcat Stadium parking.

Texas State University groups are Powwow Partners

Three Texas State University student organizations were selected to be Powwow Partners for the upcoming Sacred Springs Powwow, scheduled for October 11th from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at the Meadows Center, 201 San Marcos Springs Drive.  The Hispanic Business Student Association, Sigma Lambda Beta, and Sigma Lambda Gamma responded to the Indigenous Cultures Institute, local nonprofit producers of the annual powwow, who asked for student-volunteers for their event.  In return the Institute pledged a financial contribution towards their student activities, presentations on the indigeneity of Hispanics, leadership training, internships for the Indigenous Summer Camp, business projects for possible class credit, and a commitment of community support for their events and fundraisers.

The Institute brings attention to the San Marcos springs through their annual powwow.  The Texas State students will help with various functions required to build and implement a major event, such as set-up, admissions operations, vendor support, traffic control, volunteer coordination, and other skill-building experiences.  The Hispanic Business Student Association was the first to enroll three members in the powwow’s leadership training.
