Next week our speaker is Kirsty Peake LRPS from Devon, who will be presenting her talk on Yellowstone. The talk is in two halves, the first is Yellowstone National Park and the second on The Wolves of Yellowstone.
Kirsty is first and foremost an Animal Behaviourist. Her area of interest is ‘all things’ canine. She ran a behaviour and training practice in South Devon. The biggest battle was to change the attitude of thinking of dogs and treating dogs as wolves.
|
|
Her research took her first to Bavaria
and then ultimately to Yellowstone National Park after the
reintroduction of the wolves in 1995 and 1996. She and her husband have
spent over 20 years splitting their time between their home in Montana
and their home on Dartmoor. Now based back permanently in the UK, each
day Kirsty receives up to date reports on the wolves that she knows so
well.
Yellowstone became an important place
for Kirsty. She soon realised that there was much more to it than just
wolves! It boosted her interest in photography and it was 10 photographs
from Yellowstone that gave her the LRPS from the RPS.
The first half of her talk will be all
about Yellowstone, its history, unique environment and the animals that
live there. The second part will be about the wolves of Yellowstone,
their lives, their struggles.
Kirsty is a published author on wolf
behaviour and has given talks on them in Europe and the USA as well as
in the UK. She lectured on wolf behaviour and ecology.
She is Secretary and Programme Host for Newton Abbot Photographic Club.

DI group meeting – Monday 13 May at 7.30pm – Clubroom and Zoom
Last month we were privileged to look at and share some fascinating images from eight members. The meeting was very well attended both in the clubroom and zoom, which I expect will inspire members to share their images at the next meeting in about ten days’ time on Monday 13 May at 7.30pm.
These informal meetings are a great opportunity to share your work with other members or simply to gain some inspiration. If you would like some advice, to share a project you have been working on or simply want to share some of your images outside the competition environment, please send your images to dig@bristolphoto.org.uk by email or WeTransfer service by 5.00pm on Saturday 11 of May (please note, a day earlier than usual) so they can be included.
Please number your images in the order you would like them to be viewed and resize to the usual competition size, not essential but helps to keep the file sizes manageable.

PDI Annual Competition - Important Message
|
Last night, in mentioning the class letter to use for the Nature entry I suggested using the letter N as the class letter. This was an error on my part (but is based on some discussions of planned/maybe changes). Historically, and in the present regulations on the website, the letter Y has been used for Nature photographs. In the interests of allowing all proper entries I suggest that either Y or N will be acceptable for entries this year. My apologies for any confusion.

BPS Competition Information and Rules
With Council’s approval, we have tried to streamline and clarify the Competitions section on the website. Please take a look and let us know if there are still any aspects that are unclear. (These can be found under Competition Rules & Info in the Members' Area of the BPS website).
In terms of entry rules, there are just three changes. It’s important to take note of these because they apply to forthcoming competitions.
- The President’s Cup PDI panel competition – the previous year’s winner is not eligible to enter. (Under the old rules, winners from the past three years were excluded.)
- The Creative Competition aka the Bob Faris Trophy – the previous year’s winner is not eligible to enter. (Under the old rules, winners from the past two years were excluded.)
- The Creative Competition – you may now enter four images, in any permutation of prints and PDIs.

I have received the following from John Hudson:
Further to my talk at the club regarding drone photography, I have just learnt that DJI have launched a new starter drone - the DJI Mini 4K.
This is a basic drone, but small (below 250 gms), and is for sale on Amazon for immediate delivery for £269 or with combo (extra batteries, bag etc) £399.
So, for under £500.00 you can have the drone, the accessories, and do the registration and join BMFA (for example) to get public liability insurance.
Compare that with the cost of any camera today! All you need is reasonable weather!!!

* Included in accepted total |
Apologies if I've missed anyone out, but I had to trawl through the full list of acceptances to extract the ones from BPS members.
|
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
