Energy Independence Summit 2012
On March 26 - 28, 2012, the NJ Clean Cities Coalition and several of our stakeholders attended the Energy Independence Summit (Summit) and Capital Hill Day event, which was sponsored by the independent non-profit Transportation Energy Partners.  Approximately 200 people were in attendance at the Summit which included Clean Cities Coordinators from across the US along with other public and private business interests.  The focus of the Summit was to discuss barriers and opportunities for the advancement of clean fuel transportation at the federal, state and local level.  Highlights include:

Nancy Sutley-Chair, White House Council on Environmental Quality discussed the opportunities and barriers facing clean transportation.  Her talk centered on the fact that we are just at the point of making clean fuel vehicles a reality while acknowledging the fact that it is increasingly harder to get approvals for new tax credits or subsidies through Congress.
The Honorable Dannel P. Malloy, Governor of the State of Connecticut gave the lunch key note speech and recognized the importance of clean fuel transportation.  He noted that the state of Connecticut has established a “Green Bank” program to help fund clean fuel transportation.
Heavy duty Natural Gas Vehicles on the rise, UPS and Waste Management are moving toward the total conversion where feasible of their entire fleet from diesel fuel to natural gas and other alternative fuels.  This was echoed by many companies both large and small.
Taking the politics out of the clean vehicle technology, There was a lot of concern among conference participants that certain clean vehicle technologies (i.e. the Chevy Volt) are becoming political fodder for the upcoming elections later this year and that this is becoming a barrier to the advancement of the technology.  Groups like Clean Cities were looked upon as a resource to dispel any mis-truths about clean vehicle technologies and to cut through the politics.

Capital Hill Day Event
The focus of the Capital Hill Day event was to have Clean Cities coordinators and private companies visit their respective state Congressional offices for one-on-one discussions regarding the promotion of clean fuel transportation.  In all, 170 congressional offices were visited by Clean Cities teams. Each member of our group was given the opportunity to introduce themselves and to give a review of their respective company’s views/concerns on clean fuel transportation. The constant theme of the day was that there is strong support in Congress for increased use of alternative fuels, however, money is tight, subsidies of any kind will be keenly debated, and the passage of any bills related to clean transportation will most likely not be done until after the Presidential election.
