THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Singer, songwriter and musician, David Bowens is known for singing background vocals with local gospel  recording artists Anita Levels, Nikki Smith-Porter and with Kingdom People, but will launch his solo music ministry in a debut concert on Friday, May 20th at 7:00 p.m. at Eastminster Church, 250 North Highland Avenue in East Liberty.  The free concert will feature Anita, Nikki and James Ziegler as special guests.  David will perform a myriad of his original compositions, as well as a few songs by Israel Houghton and Brandon Heath.

David was born to Parris and Valerie Bowens in Philadelphia, PA.  As a pastor's son, music was integral to David's life for as long as he can remember.  He sang in the church choir and occasionally played drums throughout his childhood.  In their youth, he and his four siblings Parris, Priscilla, Lawrence, and Gregory formed a music ensemble called B.A.S.I.C. (Brothers and Sister in Christ). As a teenager, David sang with Philadelphia recording artists John Payton and Holiness.  Upon graduating from high school, David journeyed to Pittsburgh and attended Job Corp where he sang in a few talent shows, winning a regional competition with a group he assembled.  After completing Job Corp, he joined Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ in Pittsburgh where he sang in the choir and praise & worship team.  There he met worship leader and local recording artist Nikki Smith-Porter who became his voice teacher, sister, mentor and great friend.  Nikki and David worked out a convenient trade agreement:  in return for his voice lessons, David sang occasionally with the praise team at Eastminster Church, where Nikki is Minister of Music.    David joined Eastminster's summer camp staff and volunteered with the youth group for the following year.  Then, he was hired as security staff and became a regular attendee - eventually becoming the church's main drummer.  This is where he began to teach himself to play the piano and write songs.   Eastminster is also where David met and married Tamika, the love of his life and the mother of his three beautiful children:  Joseph, Micah, and Parris.

After all these years of working on his music, but not really knowing what to do with it, David is grateful to God for strategically placing people in his life who encouraged him to go forward:  Nikki Smith-Porter, Jerome Kirkland, Victor Grigsby, II and of course his supportive and loving wife.
