Stitchin', Bitchin' and Meeting the Queen of the Skein
HOHC Christmas Christmas Fayre ... UK SnB Day Photos ... Next Meeting ... Crafty Classes ... Charity Knits

Partly-frozen but still functional mid-November greetings to you

We hope that this newsletter finds you well, calmed down slightly from the woolly merry-go-round that was UK SnB Day, glittery-eyed over precious vintage buttons you may have bought, and loving the cosy feeling of knitting indoors while outdoors gets icy.

Galloping up on the horizon is the House of Homosexual Culture’s annual Christmas Fayre this Saturday 24th. Whichever way you lean come along, you may even meet a celeb or two.

Also the S&B Christmas Party on the 6th of December is getting closer. Any decoration ideas let us know (knitting with tinsel?!). Friends and partners are invited along with you (so you can decorate them too).

The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of blanket squares, buying, buttons, basements, and blooming marvellous mezze, as S&B London has been all over the place.

At Ev a lucky newbie won a free ticket to SnB Day and we snapped up so much tasty grub we could barely fit out the door (we didn't want to leave anyway), SnB Day was as fabulous as expected (more on that later), Nichols Buttons was mulled-wine fantastic, and to top it all off the Basement of Waterstone’s was flooded with coffee, cake, and knitting madness.

Stitch and Stoller (YAY!)

Yes, UK SnB Day has come and gone. Most of us are still humming along to the Shellac’s vintage melodies, mulling over what to make with our purchases, wishing the waffles had been actual waffles, and buzzing from meeting the Skein Queen herself, Debbie Stoller.

Rather than blah on about how wonderful it all was we thought we’d shove a load of pictures into your inbox, so those of you who missed it can pretend you were there, and those of you who went can relive the good times.

A Godzilla-sized thanks to all you lovely people who contributed to the blanket, came and said hello, complimented our new Stitchette uniforms, took our pics (Lauren, Annisa, Jenny) and asked us to be a part of such a fab day (Craig and Gerard).

You can see all the photos here

Stitch and Go Create

Gracelands Café in Kensal Rise, North London, is the perfect place to relax and knit with some home-cooked fresh food and organic coffee, not to mention delicious cakes and pastries. But why not also learn some new skills while you’re at it?

Gracelands Yard is a creative space attached to the café, where various cool and kooky classes are taught throughout the year. These include everything from sculpture, drawing, and yoga, to the more unusual classes of baby-wearing and gingerbread-house making.

Our own Laura ‘Purl Princess’ Parkinson is teaching her Knitting Basics: Fingerless Gloves class there this weekend. Courses would make excellent gifts for a crafty loved one this Christmas, or are a great way for you to learn something new for the New Year.

Stitch and Fruity Festive Fayre

This weekend S&B London will be teaching the masses to knit as part of the House of Homosexual Culture’s annual Christmas Fayre to celebrate the festive arts. There will be crafty stalls selling homemade produce, film screenings, demonstrations, food, drink, and general merriment.

Last year the guest of honour was the fabulous Sir Ian McKellen (who had a chat with us about tapestry), so it is well worth turning up to find out who this year’s special guest will be…

You can also find lots of original Christmas gifts, and can pop in to see S&B London too.

Time: Noon – 4pm

Venue: St John’s Church (Very near to Waterloo station)

Waterloo Road

Stitch and The Big Stitch

The Children's Society is asking knitters everywhere to knit a simple square for their worthy cause, and knitters of any level can take part in this World Record challenge.  Their aim is to produce the world's biggest Christmas stocking.

All you need to do is knit a 20cm (8”) red square and send it off to these lovely folks. The stocking is going to be a huge 20 metres long, which means they need 7500 squares! So get knitting people and check out their website for more details and where to send it. They are also looking for people to sew the giant if you fancy some stitching.

Not only will you be taking part in a World Record attempt, but you are helping the Children's Society support those who face discrimination and disadvantage in their daily lives. Even if you're a newbie knitter you can take part - after all it's just a square. Oh and remember, it has to be red to be part of a Christmas stocking!

That’s all the news we can possibly untangle for you this week. We hope you have all come up with something small but spangly for your Secret Santa, that you join us for a public knit somewhere in our fair city very soon, and that you as happy as us to get out the gloves, hats and scarves again.

Happy knitting – and look out for spiders lurking in your yarn stash.
