The Adventures of Jelly Bean and The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean
by Amy Meislin Pollack
Austin Macauley

"The next day Jelly Bean kept catching herself day-dreaming. So did Ms. Peiser. The two times she called on her during math she had no idea what problem they were on."

In this series, young readers meet lovable Jelly Bean, a fourth grader who frequently finds herself in the midst of family chaos. Accompanying Jelly Bean on her adventures is her faithful dog, Roger-Over. In the first book, young readers follow Jelly Bean as she’s late for school after falling in the toilet when her brothers leave the toilet seat raised. However, even after all the mishaps, Jelly Bean has a great Halloween, even though she learns that some of her friends live very different lives from her own. In the second book, readers find Jelly Bean in even more difficult situations. Her family is divided because of her brother Michael’s decision to join the Marines. Jelly Bean’s grandpa dies, and Jelly Bean learns the meaning of grief. Young readers also accompany Jelly Bean as she learns valuable lessons about friendships and how, even though a person may not want things to change, they inevitably do.  ... (read more)

Always Carry Your Scythe by Pip Paisley

"The dynamic of the mother-daughter relationship is explored in a complex way in this excellent story. ... The concept of eternal destiny is conveyed with equal parts humor, heart, and fear."
– RECOMMENDED, The US Review of Books
Water Music by Marcia Peck

"The story is gracefully measured by the author’s love of music. Lyrically rendered prose, unforgettable characters, and vividly wrought settings thrust this nuanced debut novel into the lofty realm of a masterpiece."
- RECOMMENDED, The US Review of Books
Creager: The War Paint Killer Saga by L. Hanson

"The crimes turn brazen, from daylight shootouts to the string of murders that appear ritualistic in nature. Hanson balances aspects of melancholy with humor, romance, and suspense. In short, the story proves entertaining in every conceivable way."
- RECOMMENDED, The US Review of Books
