Our speaker next week is Jane Rees ARPS, who will be presenting her talk called “The Island of Borneo: Wildlife of the Sabah Region”.
The following words are from Jane to describe what we can expect:
Growing up in the Devon countryside, I have been interested in wildlife since childhood and have been photographing it ever since I was given my first camera at the age of 8.
I am a member of the RPS Nature Group and obtained my Associateship in 2012 with a panel on The Wildlife of Virgina, where I lived for ten years.
|
|
I have been lucky enough to have been able to travel widely to indulge in my hobby, though this trip to Borneo was the first time I have been to the Far East. We stayed in three centres, the Kinabatangan River, the Tabin Reserve and the Danum Valley so there was a good variety of wildlife in different habitats. We also saw some of the countryside as we travelled from one centre to the next.
The highlights of this trip for me were seeing orangutans in the wild and the proboscis monkeys but there were many other species that were interesting to see and photograph, including birds, other monkeys, frogs and insects.
Below are a few images from the talk, but if you want to see more, then visit her website: www.reestools.co.uk |

Annual PDI Competition - Closing Date |
Don't forget that next Wednesday, 30 April is the closing date for the 2025 Annual Projected Image Competition. Entries should be sent by midnight on the 30th to competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk. The judge will be Martin Fry FRPS.
The rules for the competition are reproduced below:
Annual Projected Digital Image Competition This competition consists of the usual Club, Intermediate and Advanced levels. In addition, there is a Nature section which does not distinguish between Club, Intermediate and Advanced entrants but is open to all. Anyone wishing to enter the Nature section must indicate the entries with the appropriate identification, letter Y, in place of the level letter.
Members may submit a maximum of 4 PDI images into each entered section. These must be numbered in the entrant’s preferred order, as some images may be excluded if the total entry is excessive. In addition to the usual awards at each level, the judge is asked to select the Best Travel, People, Action, Landscape and Monochrome pictures from the whole entry (i.e. all levels). One or more of the Best Travel etc awards may well go to an image that gains another award. A trophy will be presented for the best image in each competition at the AGM. The trophy will be awarded for one of the 1st place images.

As some of you will know a defibrillator will be installed outside of Unit 13 in the coming weeks. It is not exclusively for BPS but will be available to all units on the estate. It’s one thing having the defibrillator there, it is another to have people in BPS that know how to use it, and also to administer CPR if needed.
To this end we are arranging for a training session to take place at Unit 13 on Wednesday 21 May at 6pm. The session will be a combination of verbal and practical training and will last for approximately 1 hour.
We hope that you will be interested and attend this training session, the more members we have who can step up if it becomes necessary the better.
Looking forward to seeing you on the evening.

Don’t forget to book your tickets for the upcoming Bob Faris Memorial Event, to be held on 25 May at the BAWA Leisure Centre, Filton, Bristol. The stars of the day will be renowned photographers Charlie Waite and Steven le Prevost. As well as these two amazing speakers, there will be trade stands with Fotospeed, Sigma, Clifton Cameras (hopefully), Sony and OM System, all offering generous event discounts. There will also be a raffle offering some spectacular prizes.
This promises to be a fantastic day, so why not log into the event webpage, https://bristolphoto.org.uk/bob-faris-memorial-event/, where you will find full details of the day and also the link to enable you to purchase tickets - numbers are limited, so anyone wishing to attend will need to hurry as tickets are going fast.

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items
for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter.
Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full
description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your

it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know
so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that
you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell
us we can't possibly know!
