Wednesday 6 Aug

Our next meeting will be Zoomed into the clubrooms (and homes) when we have a talk from Andy Page called Abstract and Creative Photography, about which Andy writes the following:

This presentation illustrates how I make creative and impressionistic images almost entirely in camera with almost no post processing except for minor corrections. Techniques include: ICM (Intentional Camera Movement), Multiple Exposure, Creative White Balance and Creative Close-up.
Sometimes two of these techniques may be combined for added effect. It is a passion which has evolved from my early creative instincts as a student and blossomed once modern DSLR cameras became equipped with the necessary features for me to develop my creativity. It is also a deliberate and direct contrast to the landscape photography I have enjoyed for so long. I go into some detail about my evolution from Landscape Photography, my techniques and approach, what has and continues to inspire and drive me in my efforts in this genre. I've been privileged to teach both genres on many workshops but I'm now drawing a close these activities as I pursue my ongoing development purely for personal pleasure. My aim is to inspire and to illustrate – sharing my passion and techniques which have been practised and honed over time. All I ask is an open mind.

To read more about and his photography, go to his website. In the meantime, here are some images from the talk:

DI Group
The next Digital Imaging Group Meeting will be on Monday 11 August at 7.30pm.

Meetings are informal and take place at the clubrooms and via zoom.

These meetings are a great opportunity for all members to share images outside the competition environment. The aim of these evenings is to share knowledge, projects, expertise, ideas and to obtain feedback and inspiration. So think about what techniques or tips you can share for the benefit of others, or what you might want help/feedback on.

DIG is the perfect environment for newer and less experienced members to pick up hints and tips or receive specific feedback to improve their photography and editing skills. BPS has many experienced members with diverse interests and styles who would be happy to help. If you are unsure whom to approach, just ask and someone will help or point you in the right direction.

This month we will be sharing the Smartphone Photography module with you, which will form part of the photography Course starting in September. This is a new addition to the course so any feedback/knowledge you have on this subject would be very helpful. I’m hoping that we will all learn something!

This will only take part of the evening, so if you would like to share your images at the August meeting, please send them to me at dig@bristolphoto.org.uk by 5.00pm on Friday 8 August. Please number your images in the order you would like them to be viewed and resize to the usual competition size, not essential but helps to keep the files to a manageable size. If you could please restrict the number of images to a maximum of 30 this will ensure that we enjoy a wide variety of subjects

If you have a more detailed topic/technique to share, then let me know and we can schedule a longer more focused session, or feature this on one of the intervening practical evenings.

I look forward to seeing you.

PhotoEntry Roll-out
Steps you can take to prepare:

In the previous Newsletter it was announced that the club will be switching to using PhotoEntry to manage our internal club PDI and Print competitions.
The roll-out will happen over August in readiness for the new competition season starting in September. In readiness for this, there are a few steps that you can take now to help it go smoothly.
Please ensure that Carol, the membership secretary, has your correct distinctions and email address by sending any changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
We need to set your competition class in the system for use for throughout the entire competition season and will use the following rules to help us:

Class
Criteria
CLUB
  • Photography Course Members
  • New members without any distinctions (unless you tell us otherwise).
  • Existing Club Class members (unless you tell us otherwise).
INTERMEDIATE
  • Existing Intermediate Class members excluding prior winners and those recently gaining distinctions
  • Any member new to competitions (unless you tell us otherwise).
ADVANCED
  • Any member with photography distinctions or equivalent advanced qualifications
  • Existing Advanced class members.

If you would like to check that you are assigned the right class or think that we’ve got it wrong, then please email competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk.

Keep an eye out for an email with the following subject: “Bristol Photographic Society PhotoEntry System” over August. This email will contain important information about resetting your password so that you can log in. If you haven’t added the PhotoEntry system email address to your email contacts or spam filter safe list, the email may end up in your Junk mailbox, so please update these with the BPS PhotoEntry email address: wcpf-bristol@photoentry.uk.

10 Years at Unit13
Last Wednesday we celebrated 10 years at Unit 13 with a bit of a party, which was really well attended. I think all those who attended enjoyed the chance to mix a bit of celebration, with a bit of food and lots of chat. Below are a few snaps from the evening:

Beyond The Wall
In the previous few newsletters we have been publicising a Beyond The Wall trip to Hartlebury Castle to photograph an English Civil War re-enactment by the Sealed Knot. Disappointingly only four members signed up for the trip, but those four had a wonderful day out, evidenced by this from Steve Field:

4 of us went back in time to the 17th century and witnessed the English Civil War at Hartlebury, near Kidderminster. All courtesy of the "Sealed Knot". A photographic feast of colour, characters and one or two loud bangs just to keep us awake. A great outing for Beyond the Wall and many thanks to Mike Hall for arranging.

Below are some of Steve's pictures from the day:

Somewhere to Visit
Thanks to Mike Martin for the following:

CLEARWELL CAVES  - SCULPTURE EXHIBITION – until 31 August.

Fancy a day out; something different, why not visit Clearwell Caves:

70 artworks by 60 international artists are on show and transition from monochrome black and white, through earth colours, primaries and metallic tones into dazzling technicolour. 16 of the pieces were created especially for the exhibition, several have never been shown before, and some will not be seen again.

Artists taking part range from Antony Gormley, Maggi Hambling, Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas, to post-war pioneers Lynn Chadwick, Geoffrey Clarke and William Tucker, through to Polly Morgan, Tavares Strachan, Ann Christopher, Merete Rasmussen, Peter Oloya, and many more. In collaboration with Gallery Pangolin (this is the gallery many BPS members visited near Stroud in 2023 with the Beyond the Wall Group).

The sculpture exhibition is free with regular ‘Cave Entry‘ tickets purchased up to 31 August 2025. Online booking highly recommended.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Well done to Carole Brown and Sue O'Connell, who both had images accepted in the recent Winchester National BPE Exhibition. Carole had 4 acceptances and Sue 7 (including 2 Certificates).

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Marketplace
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
