PAGB Interclub DPI Competition - Warwick
BPS will be representing the WCPF at the annual PAGB Interclub Competition to be held at Warwick on Saturday 14 July at Warwick University. This event brings together the top two Clubs from each of the 15 Federations, together with the top 8 placed clubs from the 2017 Championships to compete to find the Champion Club for 2018. Admission is from 9.30am by prepaid ticket only; these can be purchased by completing the form (download here) and sending it with the correct remittance and an SAE, to the address shown on the form. This is a great day out when you get to see some of the best images in Great Britain and at the same time get to meet members from other clubs from across the country.

Annual BPS Pilgrimage
For the last few years, BPS members have gone to the annual Berkeley Hunt point to point races at Woodford. This year they are being held on Saturday 28 April. The event is unusual for point to point races in that there are very few restrictions, if any, between you and the action, so good photos are relatively easy to get. Given fine weather, this is always a grand day out with plenty to do and see between races. Full details of times, location etc can be found by following this link or going to their Facebook page.

For those who can't make the 28th, there are a couple more dates for your P2P diary:

Sunday 6 May - Holnicote Races (between Minehead and Porlock) first race at 2pm

Saturday 12 May - Holnicote Races first race again at 2pm

Beyond The Wall - Dates For Your diary
Here is some advanced notice of a couple of future events being organised by David Grierson at Beyond the Wall.

Monday 30 April: Get the best from your Epson printer. Presentation by Epson technical sales manager.

Monday 21 May: Mount cutting presentation with Longridge mount cutters. Try their mount cutters on the night.

Monday 18 June: How to enter external Salons and Competitions hosted by Jeff Hargreaves

Success For BPS Speaker
Rohan Reilly, who visited us at the end of last year, has been very successful in the Sony World Photographers Awards. See Rohan's winning images by following this link. - it just goes to show that BPS only invite the best to speak to us!

Calling All Film Workers
Local photography shop, Photographique, are running a competition for analogue print makers. The competition carries cash prizes, which might tempt a few to retrieve that old processing kit from the attic and get printing again. Full details here.

What a Coincidence!
Danny and I booked some time ago to go on a Rail Discoveries holiday to the Isle of Wight. Our tour leader was just introducing himself when suddenly Margaret Collis appeared. She and Gordon were on the same holiday. Margaret had spotted Danny earlier but Gordon was sure she was mistaken. Undeterred, Margaret sought us out.
So it came to pass that three former BPS chairmen and one judge joined together for most meals in the hotel. It gave us the opportunity to put the world to rights and to discuss the happenings at BPS and WCPF. Did we get any competition winning images? Probably not, as the lighting conditions were poor. That is our excuse anyway but knowing Gordon he probably managed to pull something out of the bag.

Brief Encounters by Mark Fairhust can be seen at the Goods Shed Tetbury (Gumstool Hill, Tetbury, GL8 8DG).
Photographer Mark Fairhurst began his career photographing inanimate objects, from jewellery to plugs, which were used in advertising. Seeing his work, someone told him that if you can make a plug look good, imagine what you can do for people.
It was this that sparked the idea of switching to portraiture and now an exhibition of his work is to be shown at Tetbury Goods Shed in Gloucestershire.
Fairhurst's pictures are usually taken on location and often he has little time to capture the image he wants.
Brief Encounters displays images taken on a one-to-one basis, often only with a short time to prepare the set on location.
"It's a challenge to create a relaxed atmosphere other than in a studio," says Fairhurst. "I would never have thought that I would be in front of so many famous people in my career."
He works in black and white taking inspiration from photographers such as Irving Penn, Jane Bown, David Bailey and Richard Avedon.

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Sue O'Connell has been awarded a Gold Medal and an HM at the recently held Wessex Dragons international exhibition - well done.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
