Summer Yard Care

This is the time of year when many people like to work in the yard, but if you're worried about using toxic chemicals that could harm your pets, here is a nifty recipe for a  natural weed killer that won't hurt you, the pets or the kids.

1 gallon white vinegar
1 cup of salt
1 Tablespoon Dawn dishwashing liquid

Mix well and spray on the unwanted plants.
Caution: I made a batch of this and found that it also will kill grass if you use too much.

Sunburn!

Some dogs and cats are prone to sunburn. Here is an article on how to protect your animal from skin damage:

White cats are particularly sensitive to the sun. Skin damage to the nose is often not identified as sunburn.

Helping Animals

Always remember to check with your local shelter to see what they need. Your donation will go directly to the animals, in sharp con- trast to some of the large
national groups, whose donation income goes  toward large administrative salaries and other expenses, not necessarily for animals.

This issue is coming to you a few days earlier than usual because I wanted to include information about holiday pet safety tips for the weekend and to wish everyone who is celebrating it a happy Independence Day!

Because of the noise associated with fireworks and the increased activity of people outdoors, it's best to keep all pets, especially cats, indoors during the festivities. Unlike dogs, cats seldom come when called. If they are frightened, they will more likely hide or run away. Even an obedient dog can run away if frightened by the noise and flash of fireworks. It's best to protect them inside.

Disturbing petfood video:
With so many recalls of just about every brand of petfood out there, it's very confusing and frustrating to find something we can safely feed our cats! Here is a video that came out in 2007, but the information is still helpful:

Here is a very touching tribute to a special cat, sent in by  Ruth Dickover:   (RIP, Wordsworth)

Wordworth’s Song

I love how your ears twitch, whenever you sniff me,
And when I hold out my hand, I love how you lick me,
I love the way your purr is oh so heavenly,
But Wordsworth, most of all, I love how you love me.

I love how you knead me, whenever I hold you,
I love how you jump on me, without being told to,
I love the way you always cuddle up with me,
But Wordsworth, most of all, I love how you love me.

I love how your eyes shine, whenever you look at me,
And when it’s breakfast time, I love how you meow loudly,
I love the way your kiss is so soft and furry,
But Wordsworth, most of all, I love how you love me.

I love how your tail wags, whenever I sing to you,
And when I come home at night, I love to play with you,
I love the way you groom yourself and nuzzle me,
But Wordsworth, most of all, I love how you love me.

Note: To be sung to the tune, I Love How You Love Me, by Barry Mann and Larry Kolber
