Organizing L.A.'s Volunteer Power Since 1991

Dear Friend,
It’s that time of year again. The time of year when we count our blessings, reflect back on the positive and not so positive experiences of the past year… and we ask you to consider making a financial contribution to L.A. Works.
For me, the year has been bittersweet. On Martin Luther King Day earlier this year, my mom passed away. In fact, I got the news right after attending a stellar day (albeit very rainy) of L.A. Works programming and beautification at Van Nuys Elementary School in the Valley. Governor Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver and the entire Schwarzenegger family joined us for a terrific MLK Day celebration. My mother, who spent the majority of her adult life as a volunteer, would have been proud.
Among the many blessings this year has been your continued support and the participation of so many L.A. Works’ volunteers. Our core staff: Deborah Brutchey, Gil Gonzalez, Porsha Pearson, and Reena De Asis work countless hours to deliver high quality programs and provide excellent services to our community service partners and our BusinessWorks corporate partners. Of course, we all miss our good friend and former director of operations, George Hill, who is probably still having nightmares about running out of paint.

Most of all, we value the opportunity to continue touching the lives of Angelenos by beautifying schools, mentoring at-risk kids, working with seniors, volunteering at animal shelters, cleaning up our parks and beaches, and countless other good deeds.
Everything we do costs money. Paint, supplies, equipment, office expenses, van maintenance, insurance, internet service, and on and on. I’m sure you can relate. We need your financial support. Here’s a brief overview of how you can help L.A. Works:

|
- A gift of $50 helps cover the costs of our projects with toddlers and young children at transitional living facilities while the parents attend life-skills classes;
- A gift of $100 will pay for 5 gallons of paint to be used in beautifying a Title-1 school with a colorful mural;
- A gift of $250 will support the training of 100 volunteer project leaders to lead projects at shelters, community centers, schools, parks, and assisted living facilities;
- A gift of $500 supports the costs for program staff members to drive throughout LA to meet with nonprofit organizations to secure, create and coordinate volunteer projects; and
- A gift of $1500 will pay for a month of technology software, licensing and support for our online volunteer management database system.

One last note, in 2011 L.A. Works will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Stay tuned for a great year of volunteer service events. We’re kicking it off with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 17th. Be sure to check out the great commemorative poster by artist Shepard Fairey. We’re making them available for a contribution of $250. It’s a great piece of art for your personal collection and it also makes a great gift. Thank you Shepard!!
