Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 18 November

Next Wednesday, 18 November, we are pleased to welcome Ashley Franklin ARPS ABPPA APAGB BPE1* to our screens when he will present his talk: From Pursuit to Passion to Profession.
How did Ashley the amateur snapper become Ashley Franklin Photography offering a wide spectrum of professional services? In Part 1, see how the pursuit quickly became a passion as Ashley made his way
through the camera club world and, in Part 2, how he ventured into the commercial sphere. Ashley would not have become a pro without the stimulation and inspiration he picked up as a member of Derby City Photographic, so this presentation is a celebration of the camera club ideal as well as a journey into the world of a professional practitioner with all its perils, pitfalls, triumphs and rewards.
Some examples of Ashley's commercial work

The talk starts at 19:30hrs but will be open from 19:15hrs.

Competition News
The following is hot from the Competition Secretaries' Office:

Projected Image Competition Round 2 - images culled.
Please note that entries for the PI2 competition to be judged on 25 November have been reduced. The entry is oversubscribed with 110 images being entered, so some images have been discarded from the advanced class. If you entered the prescribed Monochrome competition, your image 2 from the Advanced Open competition has been culled. The effect of this is that Advanced group members have a maximum of two entries remaining in the competitions that evening. The culled images remain available for members to enter in future competitions.

Nottheprint Projected Image Competition Round 2
The deadline for entries for this competition is next Wednesday the 18 November. It is being run as if it were a PI competition.

It may be worth a reminder that the prescribed subject for Advanced entrants is A Line From A Poem

You may want to use your image directly to illustrate the line.  So, “Zebra crossing puddles in dips of the dark stripes” from Adrian Mitchell’s poem “Watch Your Step – I’m Drenched” may well be a picture of puddles on a zebra crossing.

Alternatively, your chosen line may invite a less literal image. “Life, what is it but a dream?” from Lewis Carroll’s “A Boat Beneath a Sunny Sky” doesn’t have to include either a boat or a sunny sky.

Indeed, it’s quite permissible to take a line quite out of its context. As your photo title, it doesn’t have to refer back to the whole poem it’s from. If, say, you use Wordsworth’s “Ne’er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!” as your title, it needn’t have anything to do with Westminster Bridge or a river. It could be used for a picture of a sweetly sleeping elephant.

Whatever you choose, when you send in your image, please title it in this format, including the poet’s name: 03_Ne’er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep! William Wordsworth_666Z.

Dr Michael Symes
It is with great sorrow that we have to announce the sad passing of Dr Michael Symes. Michael had been a member of the Society since 1987, and, despite living near Dursley, he and his wife Joan regularly attended our Wednesday meetings. He bore a multitude of health and mobility problems over the years with great faith and fortitude. Michael was taken seriously ill whilst visiting friends in Winchester five weeks ago. He remained in Winchester hospital until he was transferred to Andover Hospice last week where he died on the morning of Wednesday 11 November. Michael was one of nature’s gentlemen and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts go out to Joan at this sad time.
