John 4:13-14 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

THE WATER OF LIFE

It is the most important molecule in the world--water. It is something we cannot live without. If the body is deprived of fluids for too long, the internal organs begin to shut down and die. Water carries oxygen and nutrients through the body. Water is used to flush impurities out of the body. Without water, the body cannot digest food. When water is scarce, as it has been in our nation's drought this summer, everyone talks about it. It is not an overstatement to say that water equals life.

That is why Jesus used water to illustrate an important spiritual truth for the woman at the well. The "water" that He could give to her (the forgiveness of her sins) was critical for her. It was something that she could not live without, just as she could not live without the water from the well.

But Jesus' "water" would do even more for her than a drink from that well could do. His "water" would also give her eternal life. For through the forgiveness of sins the way to heaven was open to her.

Have you noticed the farmers' fields as you drive around the countryside this summer? I have. I notice when the corn on one side of the road looks good because it has been watered and when the corn on the other side of the road looks bad because it has not been.

You can see in people too how a spiritual drought affects them. When they are filled with the water of Jesus' life-giving word and the forgiveness of sins, you can tell. When they do not drink from this fountain regularly, you can tell that too.

As we look around this summer and understand how important it is to have water when we need it, let's remember too the more important water that Jesus gives us, the water of life that everyone needs for eternal life. This is water that you can share as Jesus did!
