WRI Wildlife Hospital: Seasonal Update

The wildlife hospital is moving and we will update you in the next newsletter or before with the details of our new site. We’ll be sad to leave our current location in Navan which was ideal in many respects but it’s out of our hands. Extensive efforts have been underway for the last couple of months to find a new home. Please note the current Hospital Opening Hours are 9 am to 5 pm.

Appeal for Help
We are going to be moving the wildlife hospital soon and will need to move various portacabins that form parts of our working space. This requires Hiab truck cranes and is an expensive service.
Does anyone know anyone who works in or has links with the Hiab crane industry that might be able to help? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please email enquiriues@wri.ie if you can help.
 Halloween Tours
We ran three special and spooky Halloween Talks over the respective mid-term break where children could learn about the creatures of the night that we have at the hospital. There was a presentation with lots of lovely photos and videos about Irish animals, particularly the nocturnal ones, a walk through our yard and the children got to meet some of our animal care volunteers with a few surprises along the way...
  Juliana is in charge of enrichment which involves providing species-appropriate challenges, opportunities and stimulation for animals. In the wildlife hospital, this includes providing perches for our birds to stand/sleep on and water baths so they can clean themselves. Repurposed paddling pools provide this function for the larger waterfowl. We hide mealworms in toilet roll centres along with other destructible material for hedgehogs to enjoy searching out. Our young otters' enclosure in Dunsany is filled with branches and other items to provide hiding spots and simulate
a natural environment and food are hidden around the area for them to find.

 Wonderful news & another huge leap forward for WRI. The WRI CPD program is reopened, folks! WRI has partnered with Duggan Veterinary CPD for the provision of our WRI Wildlife CPD Courses.
Their CPD division delivers veterinary CPD courses online and onsite. Their brand new state-of-the-art facilitates in Tipperary offers a wet lab for practical training as well as a lecture room for theoretical sessions.

Speaker: Liz Mullineaux BVM&S DVM&S CertSHP MRCVS, RCVS Recognised Specialist in Wildlife Medicine (Mammalian). If at all possible that as many of us who can attend the Live Webinar where possible, this will help us to get to know each other and reforge the connections in this group.
For Vets: You do not have to attend the LIVE webinar as it will be recorded and accessible via your learning profile but you do need to register beforehand to avail of the 1 CVE credit and access your VCI Approved Certificate of Completion.
This will be a precursor webinar for those planning to attend the 2-day Introduction to Wildlife Rehabilitation Course to be held on March 12th & 13th 2022 (save the date in your diary)
Raptor Protocol
Reminder for rehabbers to please contact the NPWS at natureconservation@housing.gov.ie re any bird of prey casualties that relate to human activities for example poisoning, persecution, disturbance, collisions, etc as per the Raptor Protocol as detailed on the NPSW website as linked. NPWS produce detailed annual reports with the information reported to them, click the link below for more information.
