The quiet of winter will soon follow a glorious Colorado autumn. Blue Skies Inn’s ancient trees were planted by Ferdinand Schneider, the original gardener at the property owned by the founder of Manitou Springs. The brilliant leaves on the 140 year-old Buckeye tree have been wonderful to behold. It is always a mystery tree for guests since it is unusual to find one growing so far away from where it should be.
Discovering the tree while building the inn in 1996, that towering tree was nowhere to be found in western tree identification books. The innkeepers discovered that it is officially an eastern tree that ordinarily grows no father west than Ohio. Our text explained that early pioneers would place a deep brown buckeye nut in their pocket to “ward off rheumatism.” The early pioneer who planted a seed from his pocket way back in the 1800's would be amused to see how tall his tree has grown. All of those nuts would surely ward off a lot of rheumatism!
Enjoy a winter respite at this quiet inn tucked among the ancient trees by Fountain Creek. Innkeepers tiptoe up the stairs to leave baskets with a full hot breakfast at each door in the morning. Guests enjoy dining in their own sitting rooms or snuggled up by their fireplace. Escape the world for a couple of days of quiet at Blue Skies Inn B&B. Half a million muffins baked in 20 years!
