Hello Firstname

Wednesday 6 June

Next Wednesday we will be holding the Annual Print Competition, when the judge will be John Tilsley APAGB DPAGB ARPS from Dorchester. John organises the WCPF judging seminars, so should know what he is doing tonight; from past experience we will be in for a bit of a judging treat.

AGM
Members are reminded that this year’s AGM takes place on 4 July. All motions for the AGM must be received by the Secretary by 11 June at the latest (please see page 13 of your BPS Handbook 2017-2018, which states that the date is 31 May, this has been extended). All motions must be in writing, signed by the proposer and seconder and posted to: The Secretary, Bristol Photographic Society, Unit 13, Montpelier Central, Station Road, Montpelier, Bristol, BS6 5EE no later than 11 June.
Full notice of the AGM will be sent out in a separate newsletter in the coming week.

Studio Group Competition
The studio competition will be for images taken during any of the studio group meetings that have taken place in the 12 months ending 31 May 2018. Any member who has attended these sessions can submit up to four images which they should rank in order of their preference for being entered in the competition. The images should be sent in an email with 'Studio Competition' in the subject line to: competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk by midnight on 24 June and should follow the normal rules for projected image competitions i.e.:
1.  If you do not receive a Submission Report, this may mean your images have not been received.
2. Submissions can only be made by email and are not accepted on the night and cannot be made by CD, flash drive or memory stick.
3. Please be aware that the images are handled automatically once loaded into the competition software and the software will reject incorrect images (too large or wrong naming pattern).
4.  Images must not be greater than 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high - Note that Portrait format images must not be more than 1050 pixels high.
5.  Save the images as a JPG using the highest quality. (Other file types such as TIFF or PSD will not be accepted).
6.  The projector uses the sRGB colour space and hence you should save the images using the sRGB colour profile. Other profiles (such as Adobe98 or ProPhoto) may result in incorrect display of the image.
7. Name each file you enter in the following pattern. For example: 01_Alexandrea_296S.jpg
•    01, 02, 03, etc. to show order of preference
•    underscore (not a hyphen)
•  Title of the image (which can contain spaces and hyphens but must not contain underscore)
•      underscore (not a hyphen)
•    Your Membership Number (shown on this newsletter) followed without a space by the letter S.
The images will be shown randomly in pairs following the AGM on the 4 July and all present will vote on them on a knockout basis until we have an overall winner who will be presented with the studio trophy.
If you’ve enjoyed a studio group meeting please support this new competition, it is a great chance both for the experienced members and for those new to competitions to try their hand.

Programme Change
Would members please note that there is a change to the advertised programme. On June 13 we were due to welcome Kathryn Scorah. Unfortunately, she is unable to make it, so we have an alternative evening provided by Keith Wood and Barry Mead. More details closer the date.

Wednesday 6 June
Closing date for the President's Cup and Garmston Bowl. Full details of entry rules etc can be found in your BPS Handbook.

Garmston Bowl: This is a competition, open to all members, that is for a panel of 5 related prints on any subject.
President's Cup: This is a competition open to all members
excluding holders of ARPS, EFIAP, DPAGB or EPSA and higher distinctions plus previous winners (of the cup). It will be judged as a panel of 3 related images on any subject. The images will be displayed at the competition individually as well as with the addition of an 'automated' triptych.

From the above, members will realise that this is a competition that excludes the more successful competition entrants, so it is an ideal opportunity for newer or less experienced members to enter a club competition.

Cups
As the AGM draws ever closer, so does the time for all cup holders to return their cups, so please let Keith Wood have them at any Wednesday meeting between now and the end of June.

PAGB Interclub DPI Competition - Warwick
BPS will be representing the WCPF at the annual PAGB Interclub Competition to be held at Warwick on Saturday 14 July at Warwick University. This event brings together the top two Clubs from each of the 15 Federations, together with the top 8 placed clubs from the 2017 Championships to compete to find the Champion Club for 2018.
Admission is from 9.30am by prepaid ticket only; these can be purchased by completing the form (download here) and sending it with the correct remittance and an SAE, to the address shown on the form. This is a great day out when you get to see some of the best images in Great Britain and at the same time get to meet members from other clubs from across the country.

Follow this link to read all about a treasure trove of pictures found in a loft. Hopefully the link will still be "live" by the time you try it, apologies if the BBC have taken it down.
Thanks to Keith Wood for this.

Street Photography Workshop
We have received the following from Peter Weaver at Hanham Photographic Society. If you are interested, please contact Peter directly by following this link.
I am enquiring whether any of the Bristol PS members might be interested in a Street Photography Workshop run by Damien Demolder, ex-editor of Amateur Photographer in Bristol on Thursday 7 June between 10.00am and 4.00pm, cost £35 per person.
I could do with a few extra people coming along. This seems to be a very good opportunity to learn some good techniques using some of the latest Panasonic cameras but I suppose you could also use your own.
Could anyone wanting to come along please contact me direct by e-mail?
Street Photography Workshop
This is a practical hands-on day of learning how to improve your street photography through seeing in new ways. Damien demonstrates a range of principles around using light, finding backgrounds and working in public areas, and then helps the group to find their own way at their own pace. It's a day suitable for all levels of experience, and is certain to change the way you see and shoot - no matter what subjects you are usually interested in.  Cameras and lenses will be provided, so you only need to bring your imagination.

Studio Hire
Following this month's Council meeting, it has been decided to increase the hire fee for the studio from £30 to £35. This increase takes immediate effect, however existing bookings will be honoured at the old rate.

Beyond The Wall - Dates For Your diary
Here is some advanced notice of a couple of future events being organised by David Grierson at Beyond the Wall.

Monday 18 June: How to enter external Salons and Competitions hosted by Jeff Hargreaves

Monday July 23rd: Producing B and W images in Lightroom.

The following is from BTW leader, David Grierson:

YouTube: Many members have mentioned certain names who have great learning sites on YouTube. What I’d like to create is a database of these names so we can all benefit.
A couple I use are:
  • Anthony Morganti - click here
  • Photos in colour - click here
Please email your “go to” sites to mail@dgrierson.co.uk and I’ll publish the results.

Following on from the recent talk on mount cutters by Longridge, they have now written to say that members can get a discount on the cutters, however to get this discount, orders will have to be placed over the phone, quoting Bristol Photographic Society and Chris Longridge.

Fotospeed Academy
The Fotospeed Academy is holding a workshop at the BPS clubrooms on 16 & 17 June to help those who are looking to go for distinctions with the likes of RPS, FIAP, PAGB, BPA and more. The course is being run by ‘The Welsh Dragon’, AKA Margaret Salisbury. Margaret will display examples of successful and also unsuccessful panels, to highlight their strengths and weaknesses. She will offer guidance to participants looking for Distinctions or running Open/International Exhibitions, and use her own experience to encourage and assist you.
She will also explain the up to date criteria for the different associations and John Herlinger from The Fine Art Print room will also be on hand to share his knowledge on the best ways to present your work for panels. Finally, you will be asked to bring your own work with you which will be displayed and reviewed by other members in the class. BPS already runs its own print mentoring evenings, but this could well be a useful addition to those evenings. The dates are 16 & 17 June (two courses). Full details can be found by following this link.

Masters of Photography
Master of Photography competition has returned this year on Tuesday nights at 8.00pm on Sky Arts (sky 122), with a prize of 100,000 euros for the last man standing. Each week the photographers' ability, creative instinct and versatility are tested in different ways in various European countries with different themes; with one photographer deleted. The first week was on Tuesday 29 May based in Naples.
Thanks to Peter Holbrook for this.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Studio Bookings
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

Items For Sale
Please note, we can only carry adverts for items to sell if those items actually belong to the member advertising them.

If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.

Photographic Acronyms
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.

Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol know.
