Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 5 February
Next Wednesday we welcome Roy Jacobson CPAGB from Portishead who will be presenting his talk titled Things and Wings. Roy provides the following description of his talk:

I am a member of Portishead Camera Club with my main interest being wildlife photography with the emphasis on birds especially in action. I also enjoy aviation photography.
I will be showing wildlife images from various UK locations plus the Camargue, the Everglades and New England amongst others. Some of these will be captive animals which bring particular challenges and I have also recently attended a few wildlife workshops which have proved interesting and I hope you will feel the same.
Most of the aviation pictures have been taken at air shows with my aim being to bring added value to the shots by capturing key moments to emphasise the action.
Where I think it’s appropriate I like to show images in black and white but I realise this is subjective and look forward to debating

A couple of Roy's photos showing both types of wings!

Beyond The Wall
Damien Demolder will be giving a presentation at our club night on Wednesday 26 Feb and will be doing a "Street Photography" workshop on Thursday 27 Feb. This is a practical hands-on day of learning how to improve your street photography through seeing in new ways.
Damien will demonstrate a range of principles around using light, finding backgrounds and working in public areas, and then will help the group to find their own way at their own pace. It's a day suitable for all levels of experience, and is certain to change the way you see and shoot - no matter what subjects you are usually interested in.
Cameras and lenses will be provided, by Panasonic so you only need to bring your imagination and memory cards.
Cost will be £35 per head and numbers are limited to 15 - (I have already had places booked! Steve)

Being on a "1st come 1st served" basis, the following have successfully booked their place on the Street Photography Workshop.
1 Ashwin Chauhan
2 Mike Hall
3 Jenny Morris
4 David Alderson
5 Joe Jancar
6 Robert Phelps
7 Glynnys Poole
8 Kevin Poole
9 Derek Ripper
10 Andrew Tandy
11 Wendy
12 John Hudson
Using my "A" Level maths I have deduced there are just 3 places left.
If interested, please reply to Steve Field at btw@bristolphoto.org.uk
Note - This is in addition to the Steve Russell Studios visit the same evening so it promises to be a fun packed day"

A visit to Steve Russell Studios has been arranged for the evening of 27 Feb - time to be advised. There is a limit to numbers so a "pecking order" will be set up nearer the time.
Here is his website to get a taster:  www.steverussellstudios.com

Exhibitions to Visit
There is an exhibition of photographs at Lacock Abbey: 'Adornments' by Carla van de Puttelaar. This exhibition is one which exhibits photographs that are inspired by the paintings by the Dutch Old Masters and (as reported by several BPS members who have already seen it) is well worth a visit.
The exhibition is open until 12 July and more details can be found by following this link.
Thanks to Mike Salter for this.

The following exhibitions are being held at the National Museum Cardiff.
  • Martin Parr in Wales: Until 4 May
  • Artist Rooms: August Sander: Until 1 March
  • Bernd and Hilla Becher: Industrial Visions: Until 1 March

Full details on the Museum website.

Arnolfini - Bristol
Zanjir – Amak Mahmoodian
Until Sunday, 22 March, 11:00 to 18:00
Open Tuesday - Sunday, closed on Mondays.
Free

Amak Mahmoodian’s Zanjir (Translation: “chain”) presents a body of photographs that cross great distances – reaching through history to bring the earliest images of Iranian photography into the present, across oceans to invite Mahmoodian’s family and friends; and across the border between life and death.
Full details here.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Wildlife Photographer of the Year – the world-renowned exhibition from the Natural History Museum – is back at M-Shed until 4 May with 100 new images. Now in its 55th year, Wildlife Photographer of the Year presents the most arresting and spectacular photography of our natural world. Encounter the beauty and fragility of wildlife, see fascinating animal behaviour and get to know extraordinary species. You’ll discover the surprising – and often challenging – stories behind the images during a time of environmental crisis.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious photography event of its kind showcasing the world’s most astonishing sights for more than 50 years. Launching in 1965 and attracting 361 entries, today the competition receives 48,000 entries from 100 countries.
Full details here.

It's worth reading the following from John Hudson:

I, like many, have been to this exhibition every year for I know not how long. I have been jaded to the point of thinking of it as a duty rather than a pleasure - especially in recent years when the "arty"-ness of the print was given more credit than its technical merit or content.

This year is different, back to good standards and some great images. I was pleasantly surprised and urge people to go along.

A Plea For Help From North West Bristol Camera Club
We have received the following plea from North West Bristol Camera Club:

I’m chair of North West Bristol Camera Club. We had our AGM the other day, and one of the things that members mentioned was wanting sources of advice to improve their images.
I wondered whether any of your members with sufficient expertise might take up an invitation to give us advice on, say, landscape or portrait photography, and would be prepared to give us a practical tutorial (and also, of course, show us some of their images). We meet on a Wednesday evening, which I know clashes with your meetings. (We’re considering moving to Tuesdays, precisely to avoid this clash.) We’re happy to pay expenses, and a small consideration for the trouble and time,

Neville Goodman

If you can help, please contact Neville directly.
