Chantrelles! Mushrooms in the wild!
In this issue:
Dear Friends,
In a fall newsletter, I introduced you to Kate, who turned 100 last December. Kate had been in her daughter's care for over 20 years and part of The Farm from the very early days, spending many weeks here during the summer months. During her most recent return, Kate became part of our Sangha, the spiritual community that makes up our Dances of Universal Peace group. Her mind was still agile and she could learn the words and sing along, picking them up just by listening to us. She would clap in time and was often overjoyed to the point of jumping up from her chair, with some of us on either side to keep her steady. In June Kate came down with pneumonia, and we all knew the end was near. A number of us gathered around her to do the songs and chants she had sung with us or heard us sing. She rallied, becoming present with us in the room, never one to miss the party!
As it became very close, most of us moved to the adjacent living room, chanting om nava shivaya as she took her last breath. All of us who got to know Kate were blessed by her presence, teaching us to enjoy life to the very end!
Namaste y'all,

In mid-summer, after a rain, the woods here abound in delicious Chantrelle mushrooms! Their bright orange color and unique trumpet shape make them easy to identify.
Some here simply wash and clean in cold water, and then drop the Chantrelles in a bag to freeze for winter, but sources online say the best way to preserve their flavor is to lightly fry them first.

In his latest book, Transforming Plastic: from Pollution to Evolution, Farm visionary Albert Bates lays it out for us once again. Albert provides a much needed wake up call, and it has made me a lot more aware of the degree that petrochemical plastic is in the clothes I wear, the food I eat, and all too often, used once and then sent to the landfill, into the water supply, and eventually the oceans. We have become numb and driven to accept what we call modern life, in spite of its very evident consequences. The book does offer a glimmer of hope. The transformation starts with campaigns to end plastic straws, grows to encompass the elimination of single use, and ultimately leads us to the development of truly renewable, biodegradeable bio-plastics. We begin by becoming informed, aware, and finding our place in a growing force demanding change. Order your copy on Amazon or directly from The Farm's Book Publishing Company.

Speaking Engagements
At the same time, I recognize that I can reach a lot more people if I go outside the community. One of my goals is to speak at colleges and universities where I can talk to young people about Right Livelihood, Service, and Finding Sanity in an Insane World. This is a time when people need to hear an uplifting message of hope.
If you are part of an organization, event, or school (or you just want to learn more about my life's work), I invite you to visit my web site www.douglasstevenson.com, where you'll find information on my lecture topics and how to bring me to speak in your area.
Thank you for your interest, and your support. I hope to see you down the road.
Peace,
Douglas
