Hello, Firstname

Important Notice
I am taking a break for a couple of weeks, so this newsletter is the only notice you will receive for events at BPS over the next three weeks. I suggest that you keep it somewhere safe as it covers, amongst other things, the Wednesday meetings content, Zoom log in details and details of upcoming DI & Studio Group meetings and the print competition closing date.

If all else fails, don’t forget that the log in details for ALL Wednesday meetings can be found in the Members’ Portal of the BPS website.

Wednesday 10 September

Next Wednesday we will be welcoming Glyn Edmunds (from Stafford) to our screens when he will be presenting his talk entitled The Wildlife and Work of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya - 2024.

This illustrated wildlife talk has a large number of images, along with some video clips, showing many different species of animals and birds in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, including animal behaviour. This talk has an emphasis on lions.

This talk will be "Zoomed" to both the clubrooms and those at home.

To give you a feel of what to expect, here are a few images from the talk:

Wednesday 17 September

Our speaker on Wednesday 17 September is BPS member Sue O'Connell FIPF MPSA EFIAP/d3 DPAGB ABPE, who will be presenting her talk entitled More Traveller's Tales.

Keeping up the tradition of favouring places not necessarily on everyone's bucket list, Sue will whisk you to three recent off-beat travel destinations: Colombia, Bangladesh and Angola. All have troubled histories, and one at least has on-going unrest, so anticipating the very reasonable question "Why?", she will show some of the magic to be found in each location.
Highlights include a remote tribe with a link back to the Aztecs, the wild street art of a C16th walled city, the chaos and cacophony of Dhaka shipbreaking, and an eerie ghost island off the coast of Africa. The talk will reflect on why we travel and on the people and experiences which shape our photography.

ADVANCED WARNING
Closing date for Print Round 1 is Wednesday, 1 October.

The judge for this round is Dennis Russ CPAGB LRPS AWPF BPE1* AFIAP and the prescribed subject is Conversation (real or imagined).

As the system is new to all, and basically the same for both PDI and prints, I'm repeating the instructions issued for the PDI competition.

To enter you will need to first log in to your new PhotoEntry account. You should already have received email instructions to do so (check your Junk mailbox in case it found its way there).

If you cannot find your invitation email, you can reset your password directly using the Login > Forgotten Password link on the PhotoEntry website: https://photoentry.uk.  Your user id will be in the format bps0000 where 0000 is your membership number prefixed with zeros to make it four digits (Example: if your membership number is 123, your user id will be bps0123).

Once you have logged in to PhotoEntry, you can upload, title and prioritise your entries for the competition. Instructions can be found by following this link: https://photoentry.uk/faq/faq.html

New competition rules have also been published which entrants should familiarise themselves with.  These can be found here: https://bristolphoto.org.uk/download-comp-rules

If you have any issues, please email printcompetitions@bristolphoto.org.uk.

Regards

Print Competitions Secretary

DI Group
The next meeting is this Monday 8 September - This is NOT a Zoom meeting

This month we are planning to make a splash!

The DI group are once again joining up with the Studio Group to provide an opportunity to members who cannot make those sessions to join in and get some practical assistance creating some great images.

Building on last Monday’s Studio Group session, we’ll be dropping a variety of small objects into water and trying to capture the splash using flash guns (If you have your own, bring it along, if not we’ll have some flashes and triggers you can try) just remember your tripods. And feel free to bring your own container if you want (Mike will have his small fish tank – see the behind-the-scenes image below).

Bring fruit, veg or anything you feel may make an interesting subject when dropped into water.  It needs to be heavy enough to make a splash but not too heavy…. the buoyancy, weight and size of a pepper or apple seem to work best. Think about interesting shapes and colour.

The prescribed print theme for Round 2 is tabletop so this would be a great opportunity to try someone different.

We look forward to seeing you.

Rachel Domleo, Mike Martin

Studio Group
Monday 8 September 10am-1pm
Following this week’s Studio session dropping fruit into water and capturing splashes we’ll be building upon this and adding a bit of fizz!  Bring fruit (or veg?), or anything you want to get wet. Think cocktail drinks too, with a cherry on!  Bring tripods, close-up lens, flash, cocktail or other glasses and/or other containers.

Monday 18 September 10am-1pm
Still Life – Autumn’s abundance however you want to define that. Bring any props you fancy to build an ‘old master’ worthy composition. Tripods, torches, a bonus.

Monday 22 September 10am-1pm
More still life – but this time using ‘Stan Farrow like’ niches to photography objects. Mike has a few different shaped recesses – can you make the most of these?  Bring tripods, close-up lenses, and objects (vases etc/grasses/flowers)

Monday 29 September
10am-1pm
Model shoot with CJ, a fantastic model and contortionist. Let’s see if you can capture some great shapes! All welcome, £10 per person, no booking needed.

1:15pm-4:15pm
Model shoot with CJ, as above, but limited to 5 people. BOOKING ESSENTIAL - £25 per person.

Any queries or to book your place contact Mike_Martin@blueyonder.co.uk

Distinctions Advisory Group
Monday 22 September - 7.30pm at the Clubrooms.

Andrew Marker, Pete McCloskey and Ralph Snook will be present to offer advice and review possible submissions for RPS and PAGB panels. ALL members who are either already on the path to distinctions or just thinking about having a go are welcome, so come along with your images (prints or DPIs) to receive advice.

For the Licentiate the RPS only accept DPI submissions and no longer prints. Our advice was largely based on print submissions, but with the RPS changed rules we will offer advice on DPIs.

Historically LRPS PDI submissions were assessed sequentially but now have to be submitted using a presentation template as outlined on the RPS Website. https://rps.org/qualifications/licentiate/lrps-presentation-layouts/

It is recommended that members read up on Distinctions on the RPS and PAGB websites as they contain much useful information:

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Marketplace
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
