Equal Protection for Plants under the Federal Endangered Species Act!

This week, the Native Plant Society of New Mexico endorsed the Equal Protection for Plants Project sign-on letter (attached). Sixty-six groups have now signed the letter. This is an invitation to add your organization to the Project.

Few people outside the plant conservation community realize that the federal Endangered Species Act provides vastly inferior protection for imperiled plants than it does for animals. Both plants and animals contribute equally to the stability, health, and functions of ecosystems. Both are required for the continuing supply of the ecosystem services which we all depend upon for survival.

For these reasons the Native Plant Conservation Campaign works for equal protection for plants and animals in conservation programs and plans, in budgets, in staffing and - as in this project - under environmental laws.

If your organization has not yet signed the Equal Protection for Plants letter, please consider it.

To sign, send an e-mail to emilyr@plantsocieties.org with "Sign the Equal Protection for Plants letter" in the subject line.

Thank you!
