John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
THE WORD
Britney Spears. Martin Luther. Stephen King. Barack Obama. Mother Teresa. Elvis Presley.
Don't try to find a connection between these names. There isn't one. These are just names that many people would recognize. What did you think of when you read each of these names? We associate people's lives, their words and actions, with their names. You could say that your name IS who you are and what you do.
Jesus is called "The Word" in the first chapter of John's Gospel. Here we are told that when the beginning of our universe happened, the Word was already there. He was already existing beside God the Father. He was in substance, God.
These facts that John relays to us are profound. Surely they are theological concepts to be studied by scholars. But they were significant to John, a regular working man. And these things are significant to us also because the Word became human. That's what verse 14 says, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us."
Our God is not a God who lives far away, only to be admired from a distance. He is the God who came to us so we could know Him. So that we could learn of His love for us, His dedication, His forgiveness.
Jesus is called "The Word" because He is the expression of God's character. God isn't someone who just talks about loving and saving sinners, He is the someone who DID what was necessary to save sinners.
