Next Wednesday we will be "beaming" our speaker in all the way from Namibia, when we welcome Scott Hurd, who will be presenting his talk entitled Living and Working as a Professional Photographer in Namibia - Part 1
Scott's work and experiences in Namibia are as diverse and extreme as the country itself. He talks about his bread and butter work, everything from babies to horse shows, zeroing in on his speciality, Lodges and Hotels, and bringing in many of the activities they provide. He moves on to special assignments including documenting the birth of a gold mine and being chosen as lead photographer to shoot the President.
|
|
Wildlife and its behaviour is, for Scott, the icing on the cake, and animals play their part here, but in this talk the emphasis is on conservation. Conservation is an integral part of life in Namibia and he concentrates on crucial projects involving rhinos, vultures, pangolins, game counts and the training of anti-poaching units.
The talk begins with a look at the background, the spectacular scenery and cultures of Namibia as a place to live and work. The conditions can be severe and extreme. For the photographer this often necessitates a basic rethink and Scott discusses his technique, and reasons for it, throughout.

Below are a few images from the talk. To see more, you can visit his website by following this link: www.h4urd.co.uk |

Visit to Steve Russell Studios, Stroud.
Following Steve’s successful talk to the club last year, we have an invitation to visit his Studios in Stroud on SATURDAY, 21 JANUARY at 10AM.
The visit will cover much of the processes and equipment he talked about including the 3-D photography unit which uses 120 different cameras to capture stunning images. There is also an extensive gallery of Steve’s photography including very high resolution images capture on a 400mb sensor.
This will be a fascinating insight into the world of commercial photography. The studio covers several floors of the building in which he is located.
Steve's photogrammetary rig, using up to 200 individual cameras.
There is ample parking as the premises are part of a small industrial estate and directions to the studio are clearly posted. The address is Steve Russell Studios Ltd Unit 8a, Chalford Industrial Estate, Chalford, Stroud GL6 8NT.
I would suggest you car share if you would like to share the cost - I am happy to take 3 people with me.
I need to know approximate numbers by next Tuesday 17 Jan and you can contact me on 07765819640 or by email on mike.hall95@btinternet.com
If you are willing to drive and take others please let me know and I will try to coordinate on your behalf

I am just emailing you to let you know of a student ran photo award that we are currently hosting and we thought that your club members would like to enter our award. The theme for the awards is “connections” so this could be something you feel a connection too and it could be mental, metaphorical or physical etc.
If they choose to enter our awards they have the chance to have their work exhibited in a curated exhibition at the Tropicana here In Weston Super Mare, the venue has previously hosted the “See Monster” and Banksy's “Dismaland”, they also have the opportunity to win a cash prize of £100 and their work will be seen and judged by industry professionals from the Royal Photographic Society.
We are currently accepting submissions into our international open call and the entry fee is just £2 to enter the award with the final deadline being the 26/01/2023.
Feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions and we can’t wait to see the work submitted from your members.

|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help). |
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
