Hello Firstname

Look Out Men, The Ladies Are Taking Over!
Wednesday 2 September is the start of the new year as far as the BPS programme is concerned and we mark this occasion with a gathering of some of our lady members who will be helping our esteemed Chairman, Millie Spaven, with her offering of the 2015 Chairman's Evening. The ladies (that's the description I've been told to use) are Anthea Golding, Mary Pears, Ann Mead, Beryl Heaton and last but not least, Millie and they have promised to treat us to an evening of their own photography.

Projected Image Competition - Round 1
We kick off the new season of competitions on Wednesday 2 September with Round 1 of the Projected Image Competition. The judge for this round is Ralph Snook ARPS EFIAP DPAGB.
As usual, send your images to competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk

Club Assault On Bedmister
Last Wednesday saw a large number of BPS members descend on Bedminster for our annual club evening outing. Despite the weather not being too favourable, quite a few members braved the threatening skies and took to the streets to photograph the results of the recent Upfest festival of street art: hopefully we will see the results of the evening's efforts in future competitions. Whilst most of those who turned up concentrated on the business of the evening, photographing graffiti, at least one member was seen to have strayed from the straight and narrow and would appear to be none too happy that he was caught off piste (so to speak) by Mike Bigger!

Brecon Beacons Workshop
I wouldn't normally publish details of forthcoming workshops as I receive so many requests to do so that, if I acceded to all these requests, the newsletter would look like a travel brochure. However one request has landed in my in box this week that I thought deserved publishing; this is a workshop that is being run by our own Neil McCoubrey, I reproduce his email below:

How about a Photographic Holiday in the Brecon Beacons?

On behalf of HF Holidays, Neil McCoubrey ARPS is leading a 4 day Landscape Photography Holiday based at the Nythfa House Hotel in Brecon. The holiday starts on the 12th October 2015.

So, if you would like to join Neil to photograph Mountains, Rivers, Waterfalls and Canals in the Autumn colours and perhaps accompanied by a little, gentle Welsh rain, then please check out the holiday on this link - http://www.hfholidays.co.uk/holidays/landscape-photography  - The details for the Brecon holiday are described under the "Itinerary" tab.

Why We Should Always Read The Rules?
The following appeared recently in ePHOTOzine and could prove to be a salutary lesson to us all if we enter competitions/exhibitions but don't read the rules properly.

Why You Should Always Pay Attention To Photography Contest Rules - The photographer who managed to win, and then lose the National Geographic photo contest in the blink of an eye.
The image that won and lost Harry the competition. © Harry Fisch
When you enter a photography contest, how often do you read all the small print before doing so? The answer for most of us will be a resounding 'not very often'. But, these terms and conditions can mean the difference between your image being eligible to win and not being eligible.
Unfortunately, photographer Harry Fisch found this out the hard way when he entered an image into the National Geographic photo contest in 2012. He's recently blogged about his experience, in the hope that it will encourage more photographers to read all the terms before submitting an image.
An image of Harry's was chosen to win the 'Places' category of the competition and he was elated. All that remained to do was fill in a form claiming ownership of the rights to the image and licensing the rights for National Geographic, and to submit the original digital photo.
To his horror, Harry found out the next day that his image had been disqualified after the judges had seen the original. The reason: he had photoshopped a piece of rubbish from the far right, along the edge of the frame. You might immediately think that this would make no difference to the image itself and that this decision was harsh given the circumstances, but it clearly stated in the terms and conditions of the competition that adding or removing anything from the image is not allowed.
If Harry had cropped the bag out, or simply left it there, no issue would have arisen. It's a stark reminder that photography competition rules must be strictly adhered to and are there for a reason. Not reading them could mean disappointment.

ERIC - Photographers Wanted
I have received the following from Rhia Fávero at ERIC (The Childrens Continence Charity) which is self explanatory, if you'd like to help them, please reply directly to the email address they have provided in the email:

I am contacting you regarding an opportunity that has arisen at a local charity for one of your members to develop their photography portfolio.

I work at ERIC, the children’s continence charity. We are a small charity based in Bristol but with a national reach.

We are soon going to start a re-design of our website and need to produce new photo content for the site before this design process kicks off in mid-late October. Ideally we would start the photography project in mid-September. As a charity working to a very limited budget, we are keen to find a photographer willing to take on this work on a voluntary basis. I thought perhaps one or two of your members might be interested in helping with this project.

The project would require some travel in and around Bristol; ERIC would pay for expenses incurred. A person who is interested in children’s health or is good with children would be a bonus, but this is not essential. We can provide a reference on completion.

The subjects of the photos would mainly be families, children and our staff.

Please do let me know if you think this would be of interest to your members and please circulate to your members in your newsletter if possible. If you would like to discuss any of the above, please just drop me a line.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Rhia
