HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
CELEBRATING L.A. WORKS' 18TH YEAR
What a remarkable year for L.A. Works. Recently cited by a national media organization as one of the top 3 nonprofit civic organizations in Los Angeles, L.A. Works continues to inspire a more compassionate Los Angeles for all of us. In 2009 L.A. Works volunteers contributed more than one hundred thousand hours of volunteer community service to the city of Los Angeles. Your generosity represents millions of dollars of volunteer labor, supplies, and in-kind services to a community reeling from the effects of the worst economic recession in our lifetime.

Corporate and civic friends such as: Accenture, California Community Foundation, E! Entertainment, E*Trade, Disney, JetBlue, Home Depot, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, and UCLA (to name a few), partnered with L.A. Works to bring hope and relief to Angelinos throughout Los Angeles County.

Friends, this is a great time to become more involved in L.A. Works. Our volunteer Project Leaders manage over 80 community service projects every month. Martin Luther King, Jr Day of Service and L.A. Works Day are leading days of service in Los Angeles. The L.A. Works Emergency Preparedness program helps coordinate city-wide volunteer responses to fires, mudslides, and other catastrophes. Our corporate consulting program, BusinessWorks, helps companies marshall the goodwill of their employees to donate time and resources to homeless shelters, food banks, schools, at-risk youth programs, environmental, literacy, and senior programs. A small, but expert staff fights the good fight every single day, 365 days a year. With your support 2010 is going to be our best year ever. See below how you can make a tax deductible contribution to help L.A. Works continue its programs.  Safe and happy holidays to all of you. See you in 2010!

SPOTLIGHT:
OUR GRAMMY-WINNING DIRECTOR OF OPPS
Although George Hill is best known in L.A. Works' circles as someone who can rally thousands of volunteers to transform a non-profit facility or school, George is much more than a logistics-guru. Before his ten years as the Director of Operations at L.A. Works, George led a very different life.  Born in St. Louis, Missouri, George moved to Los Angeles in 1965 with his mother who was involved in the music industry.  After graduation, George joined the Navy and served in Vietnam for two years.  When he returned to California after his service, George followed in his mother's footsteps and entered the music industry.  In his twenty year career in the industry, George was a member of the production team that released the 1980 Grammy winning: SOS – Take your Time, Do it Right.  He also was the tour manager for such notables as Megadeath, Al Jero, and Natalie Cole.

In 1999, George transferred his skills managing band tours to managing the large-scale Days of Service and corporate service projects for L.A. Works.  One of his favorite L.A. Works experience is his first L.A. Works Day, which was a multiple-site project in the Jazz district on Central Avenue.  He loved the day's festivities and had fun making a difference in the Los Angeles community where he was raised.

After ten successful years of service to Los Angeles through his commitment to L.A. Works, George is transitioning from his full-time position to a consulting role for our larger projects.  George is pleased with his legacy and feels strongly that he has left the organization in extremely capable hands.  Of course, as a consultant and advisor to the agency, we are excited to know that George is only a phone call away.

George Hill has helped make L.A. Works a national leader in the community service movement. He will always be a valued member of the L.A. Works family.

George – thank you for your dedication to service these past ten years as you shared your heart, time, and expertise with our L.A. Works community.

IN THE NEWS: HUFFINGTON POST

L.A. WORKS'S HOLIDAY APPEAL
One of our volunteer's request for you to join her
Dear Fellow Volunteers,

I, like you, have enjoyed working on volunteer projects throughout the community with L.A. Works.  Now we are needed to help out L.A. Works, itself.  The funds we raise for L.A. Works helps to continue training new project leaders and provide supplies for the various volunteer projects they run.

A few volunteers have created a letter to send out to family and friends to ask them to consider making a tax-deductible donation to the organization.  We are planning on sending these letters out to our contacts, but there are only a few of us on the team.  We’d like to ask our community of volunteers to join us and help out this organization that helps us to find fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities throughout the city.  Every little bit counts, so please consider sending out this letter (click here), or something similar, or email Debbie@laworks.com for a word document version of the letter).

Happy Holidays, and hope to see you out and about volunteering!

Best wishes,

Tali Geva
L.A. Works volunteer

P.S. - If you'd like to join our fundraising committee, we have a meeting coming up on Tuesday! Email Debbie for more info.

A CALL FOR ACTION: VOLUNTEER OPPS!
Holiday Fundraising Committee: Our team of volunteers are planning some fun fundraising activities, including something for Valentines Day.  We are meeting this December 15th for our first committee meeting and are looking for a few more people to join us! Email Debbie@LAWorks.com for more information.

Project Leader training: Each L.A. Works project is organized and managed by a trained volunteer Project Leader.  Project Leaders make a long-term commitment (ideally at least 6 months) to lead on a monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly basis depending on the program and their availability.  By attending a brief training session, you will learn how easy it is to lead an L.A. Works project and make a difference in your community!

And don’t forget to check our monthly calendar for opportunities led by trained L.A. Works Project Leaders.

GIVE A DAY TO L.A. WORKS, GET A DAY AT A DISNEY THEME PARK
Hundreds of L.A. Works' volunteer opportunities will be shared on Disney's website for volunteers to sign up to become eligible for a free pass to a Disney theme park after volunteering at a L.A. Works service project.  Disney's exciting new promotion, "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day," was launched to inspire volunteerism.  With only 1 million free tickets available, L.A. Works anticipates an outpouring of interest for service projects in the early part of the year and we have plans to increase the number of opportunities available to help satisfy this demand.

INTERESTING TID-BIT:
AMERICANS WHO VOLUNTEER, DONATE MORE $
Americans who volunteer their time and skills to nonprofit organizations donate an average of 10 times more money to charity than people who don’t volunteer, according to a comprehensive national study on volunteering released on December 3 by the Fidelity® Charitable Gift Fund (“Gift Fund”) and VolunteerMatch. The study found many Americans have a strong commitment to community service, with 43% volunteering in the last 12 months. More than a quarter (28%) of Americans, however, has never volunteered.
