The Goose Is Out!

Hi Goose People!

A few bits of news this time - a voice workshop, a bodhran class,  an urgent plea about a missing person and an update on The Ivy House.

But first - upcoming gigs!

The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that the first section below is identical to one in the last newsletter - so if your eyes glaze over, please scroll down to read the new bits Laughing but don't forget to note that we have a great gig coming up this Saturday!

Please note that there have been some changes to the information about the Frankie Armstrong gig.

Extra Special Goose Night! Tandem, Joseph Topping and many more brilliant artists! This Saturday 16 June - DHFC

This Saturday, 16 June, we are delighted to be hosting an extra special night at DHFC (moved from The Ivy House, R.I.P.)

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A SATURDAY!!!

There will be ELEVEN people altogether, all of whom we think are excellent but we haven't (yet) been able to fit them into other Goose gigs, though we hope to do so in the future.

Appearing tonight will be:

Tandem, Joseph Topping, James McDonald, Esbjorn Wettermark, Carmel, David, Salwa Azar, Ian, Sarah, and Ben Holland.

We've tried to include a mix of different things, from unaccompanied traditional folk,  through Dylan covers/singer songwriter, via Scandinavian folk, to brilliant person with ukulele (that's you, Salwa!) plus excellent instrumentals from Tandem.

Some of them you may have seen sing at Goose Singarounds or as floorspots, others you may know from elsewhere as they haven't appeared at the Goose before. Some of them sent us demo CDs which bowled us over.

In order to fit everybody in, we have an EARLIER START THAN USUAL AT 7PM. DOORS WILL OPEN AT 6.30PM. Please click on the link above to see the running order and times.

Don't miss this, it  will be a fantastic night, and it's ONLY A FIVER ON THE DOOR! Must be one of the best bargains of the year!!

Frankie Armstrong, Lizzie Nunnery - Friday 29 June - Upstairs At The Mag

We are really delighted to be welcoming Frankie Armstrong to the Goose for the first time, and equally delighted that Lizzie Nunnery will be supporting her tonight.

This is a one-off evening which is replacing what would have been our last concert at DHFC before the Summer break. There will be floorsingers only in the first half, ie between 8 and 8.30pm, so if you want to sing please get here in time! Lizzie will be singing before Frankie's second set.

WE RECOMMEND YOU ARRIVE EARLY FOR THIS ONE AS IS IT LIKELY TO SELL OUT.

Tickets on the door only, £6.

Door 7.45pm, live music starts 8pm. Floorsingers welcome but please see above!

Frankie Has a Voice Workshop on Saturday 30 June in South Norwood, SE25!

This is not being run by The Goose, though we will be there!

The morning will be focusing on World Harmony a capella, and freeing your voice to build confidence and harmonise within the whole group.

The afternoon will be using ideas from Laban to develop your solo singing (you will not have to sing on your own, though).

The day runs from 11am to 4pm.

Advance bookings are £28 or £20 if household income is under £16k. On the door it will be £35.

The venue is Holy Innocents Church Hall (at the rear of the church),  Selhurst Road, London SE25 (I have a feeling this is the church hall I used to go to Morris Dancing practice in when I lived in South Norwood over thirty years ago  Laughing so that will be a bit weird for me!)

New Bodhran Class in Forest Hill!

Aimee Leonard, who runs the newly formed Dulwich Folk Choir, is starting a bodhran class, and the first session is on Thursday 14 June ie TOMORROW (or possibly today as it is now nearly midnight!)

Both beginners and improvers are welcome.

It will be from 7.30 to 9pm and the cost is £7 per class (£6 concessions).

Drums are available!

The venue is Christ Church (The Chapel On The Hill), which is located at the corner of South Road and Church Rise (SE23 2UJ) - you can see the steeple from Forest Hill rail station, which is just five minutes' walk away.

Buses that run close by are the 75 on Perry Vale or the 185 or 171 on the South Circular (A205).

URGENT - Missing 83-year-old Man

Many of you will know Adam, who used to manage the CPT (now The Great Exhibition) and was so supportive of  our Goose Singarounds there.

His 83-year-old grandfather has been missing from his house in Nunhead since Thursday 7 June. This is very uncharacteristic and of course his whole family is desperately worried, particularly as he needs medication.

PLEASE could you click on this link to see a picture of him, and a number to phone if you have any information, and please if you are on Facebook could you share this with your Facebook friends. If not, please could you try to let as many people know as possible.

Thanks for your help and hopefully we will have happier news in the next newsletter.

Update on The Ivy House

We've received the following email from Tessa Blunden, who is heading the effort to save The Ivy House and reopen it. It's all looking very hopeful, so fingers crossed!

Dear All,

We’ve been working hard on our business plan over the last few weeks and we’re pleased to confirm that a first draft of this has now been completed.
We have formed a private limited company (Ivy House Pub and Hub Limited) with the aim of acquiring the freehold of the building and continuing to run the venue as a profitable, thriving pub and performance space. We want the pub to be a leading destination for real ale and craft beer fans and all those interested in live music and other performance art.

In addition, we would like to see the pub open in the daytime as well as evenings, serving simple but well prepared food and offering a welcoming space to have lunch, a coffee, relax with a book or a paper or do some work on a laptop. Nunhead is an up and coming area and the supply of excellent daytime and evening venues has just not kept up with the demand – it’s time to put the pub back into the heart of the community!

We intend to maintain the top two floors of the pub as residential accommodation, with the possibility of converting these into flats (subject to planning permission).

The freehold is now back on the market with an asking price of £700,000. We understand that the residential tenants are still in occupation but are due to leave the property towards the end of the month.

We will continue to finalise our business plan over the coming weeks and we’ll keep you updated.

Please continue to support us through our facebook group (savetheivyhouse) and on Twitter (@save_ivy_house). Feel free to get in touch or contact us for more information.

The email address if you wish to contact Tessa  is savetheivyhouse@gmail.com

Also Coming Up

Our FREE monthly singarounds will continue over the Summer, with the next one Upstairs At The Mag on Sunday 8 July, followed by Sunday 12 August.

However we have no ticketed gigs during July and August - partly because we are having a well-earned rest (!), but mainly because many people are at festivals or otherwise away over the Summer.

We're back on Saturday 1 September with the Goose Stage at The Aquarius Festival, followed by The Askew Sisters Upstairs At The Mag on Friday 14 September.

Then Dick Gaughan at DHFC on Friday 28 September, supported by Philip Henry & Hannah Martin, and Jack Harris.

Advance tickets for Dick's night are £11/7 - the online concession quota is now full, but if you qualify for  a concession (ie have no income from employment) you can still buy advance offline tickets at the concessionary rate at any of our ticketed gigs (not the Singarounds).

OK That's All For Now!

We hope to see you soon, and hope to see lots of you on Saturday!

Love Nyge and Sue aka The Goose xxx
