Next Wednesday, we welcome Mike Birbeck FRPS FBPPA FDPS, who will be presenting his print talk called New York/New York.
Mike's photographic interests are people and places. He is a Fellow of the RPS, awarded in 2002, received the RPS Hood Medal in 2006 for his documentation of children with special needs. He is wheelchair bound as a result of a military injury sustained in 1982. He is President of the Disabled Photographers' Society, and Chairman of Taunton Camera Club. Mike is a member of the RPS Applied (Associate and Fellowship) distinctions panel, and served for 9 years on the Licentiateship panel. He is sponsored by Fotospeed.
|
|
About the talk - The prints are a mixture of Mike's and his wife Gillian's (ARPS) images taken in New York City in 2017. They show the iconic sights as well as less well known aspects of this vibrant city. All are printed using Fotospeed papers and inks.
You can see more about Mike and his images by visiting his website - click here.
|
The next meeting of the Print Group is next Monday, 1 October. Members who are looking to gain photographic distinctions are welcome to come along to get advice on their prints from Pete McCloskey and Andrew Marker.

Do you need some print boxes?
As our prints accumulate from time to time each of us needs to buy some more print boxes. The supplier is Nomad Cases (www.nomadcases.co.uk) and there is a discount of 10% if we order 10-24. The cost of carriage is the same whatever the size of the order so each of us saves on that too.
The print boxes usually used by the club are Nomad Heavy Duty 21x17x4 inches that, before any discount, cost £27.00 each plus £3.00 for a pair of webbing handles (all incl. VAT). If you wish to join in a bulk purchase please contact me at g.m.stirrat@gmail.com or speak to me at the club next Wednesday stating which boxes you wish to buy and how many. You can view them on the web site.

We have received the following:
Hello!
My name is Allie Cashel and I am writing to you from Envision Kindness, a non-profit that inspires kindness by gathering and sharing still and video photography depicting kindness, compassion, empathy, and connection. We know that the more positive images we share, the more compassionate, happy, and healthy our communities can be.
I am reaching out to extend a personal invitation to you and your club members to participate in this year's Our World is Kind Photo Contest! Last year's inaugural contest was a huge success with more than 1500 submissions from 650+ photographers in over 80 countries. The images were viewed more than 100,000 times and thousands of people participated in the voting phase of the contest with $1300 in prizes awarded. We know that this year's contest will be just as successful and would love for you and your club members to share your work and be part of the movement to #PictureABetterWorld.
We are proud to partner with organizations like The Global Photographic Union, Momenta, and Santa Fe Photography Workshops to help promote the contest, and also have an inspiring roster of judges including a Senior Photo Editor at National Geographic. Check out our full judges' roster, all of our promotional partners, and our fabulous CASH prizes, at the link below!
We know photography club members are passionate about showing their artistry and perspective through an image. This is a fabulous opportunity for your members to not only gain recognition for their photography (and potentially win some cash prizes! ), but also to spread kindness around the world. Many people can benefit from even a single image.
Would you be open to sharing this invitation with your members?
Many thanks for your time and consideration!
All the best,
Allie Cashel

Warning - Anyone clicking on this link needs to be careful, as they will be confronted by BPS member Mike Martin's mugshot staring out at them from page 24. Mike was the winner of the 4th round of the Profoto competition. Indeed, of the four rounds, Mike was runner up in two and first in one, so he has a more than reasonable chance of being crowned overall winner - well done Mike. |

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP.
|
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.
|
Please note, we can only carry adverts for items to sell if those items actually belong to the member advertising them.
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address. |
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.
|
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it
would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that
she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue
to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol
know.
|
|
If you have anything you think other members would like to know about, such as special events, exhibitions, photographic hints and tricks, etc. please let me know at bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk
PLEASE NOTE: ALL COPY TO BE WITH THE EDITOR BY MIDNIGHT THURSDAY TO ALLOW FOR PUBLICATION (HOPEFULLY) ON FRIDAY MORNING.
