There are only seven days left to register for Common Cents 2010, Clann Credo's National Conference on Social & Community Enterprise (Thursday, 25th March 2010, at the Raddison Blu Hotel in Athlone).
The themes of the conference sessions are 'Social & Community Enterprise’ and 'the Preliminary Recommendations of the Task Force on the Development of Social Enterprise’.
Delegates will hear about the current achievements of social enterprises and discuss what needs to be done to develop a vibrant sector in Ireland.
Gerry Higgins, of CEiS is our keynote speaker. Established in 1984, CEiS was created to provide a one-stop service for the training, development and financial needs of community businesses in Strathclyde. Gerry Higgins, regarded as one of the leading experts on social finance in the UK.
He heads up CEiS, a leading local development agency that aims to develop local economies and communities through social enterprise. Its Enterprise Support Service is now the largest in the UK.
Originally from Cork, Mr Higgins has also advised UK, French and Australian governments on the development of Social Enterprise.
His topic will be:
“...the emergence of social enterprise as operating model of choice for community and voluntary organisations. This would focus on the growth of social enterprise internationally, specific policy support in the UK, the development of the business model including acquisitions, mergers and social franchising as a growth model, and the funding and investment environment for social enterprise. This should cover a range of participant interest and I can relate material to my knowledge of what is happening in Ireland.”
We are expecting around 60 participants, from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many will be working in Community Organisations from the midlands and west. A number of people from statutory organisations and local authorities will also be present. In addition some personnel from Local Development Companies, the newly amalgamation of Local Area Partnerships and Leader Companies, will attend.
