Wednesday 19 April

Next Wednesday we have a change to the published programme. Unfortunately our scheduled speaker, Martin Fry, has gone down with the dreaded lurgi. However, Jenny Hibbert MPAGB EFIAP/s AWPF has agreed to step in at very short notice to save the day. Jenny is a highly successful nature photographer and is a recognised judge for both international and national exhibitions and a well-known speaker on the UK club circuit.

Master of Print Presentation

Next Wednesday (19th), Rod Wheelans, Gordon Jenkins, and one of the MOP sponsors will be at Unit 13 next week. Rod will present the Gold Club Award that we won in this year's MOP. They will arrive around 19:00 but we will make the presentation at start of business (or maybe 5 minutes before hand). The award presentation will be followed by the normal evening starting immediately after the presentation

Digital Imaging Group
DI Group Meeting - Monday 17 April, 7.30 pm

Last month we had a packed evening of images from five speakers presenting a variety of images of different genera including some for critique. To start with Ann had gathered some of her best macro images of insects taken over two seasons in her garden. These were indeed ultra close up images showing their life cycle in different stages. It is remarkable how she managed to capture tiny barely visible greenfly and blackfly giving birth to even microscopic babies, all in sharp focus. Part of her success is the intimate knowledge of her subjects and their behaviour.

Greenbottles Paired by Ann Mead

Sue Swift has been taking advantage of the events happening on her doorstep watching construction of those massive tower cranes we see dotted around Bristol. Inspired by the recent visit of Bill Ward to BPS Sian Jones had a go at creative photography using intentional camera movement and shared some of her images with us. John Hudson continues to create images of professional dancers in prestigious London theatres where he is lucky enough to have access and has skills to photograph in near impossible lighting conditions. A secret he shared with us last month was that although as a photographer he should be emotionally detached from the performance on the stage, how he was moved to tears by one dance company’s performance. John is also rapidly becoming more adventurous with his drone photography, capturing images from different angles.

Paul MacLeod brought images of miniature figures with some creative input for comments and he did get some very useful tips.

The next DI Group meeting is on Monday 17 April, in less than a week. The meeting is open to all BPS members. This is a gentle reminder to all members that it is an ideal opportunity to share your images with fellow members to show what you have been working on, achieving success or near success in whatever way you enjoy making images. If you are preparing for club competitions or other salons, you may want to get a second opinion at the DI meeting from your fellow members or you might just enjoy showing off your work and experiments in an informal atmosphere.

When you are ready, please email your images for presentation to reach me by 6pm(ish)  Sunday 16 April. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). If you wish to show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Salon Catalogues
We have been assured that the Salon catalogues will be delivered to Unit13 today (Friday, 14th). This year, now that the threat of Covid has diminished, we are reverting to putting the catalogues into envelopes ourselves, rather than paying a mailing company to do it for us at huge expense.

This will be done on Tuesday 18th from 10:00am. Anyone who has some time spare on that morning please come along and help us out. We have 500+ catalogues to handle so all help will be appreciated.

Best
Ralph

Distinctions Advice Workshops

The first of the above workshops will take place at Unit 13 on Monday 24 April, starting at 19:30. The advice will be given by Pete McCloskey FRPS and Andrew Marker FRPS.

This initial workshop will be aimed at prints only and for members thinking of an RPS distinction. Although aimed at RPS any advice will clearly be useful if you are thinking of submitting for a PAGB Distinction.

Future workshops will be scheduled and will vary in content, including advice on PAGB Distinctions and digital submissions.

If you are interested in this first workshop, please get in touch making sure that you include all three of the following:
Thanks
Ralph

John Chamberlin
I have received the following from John Chamberlin who was made an Honorary Life Member of BPS last week:

Can I express my sincere thanks to the BPS Council for the honour of granting me Life membership. When Pete stood up on Wednesday, I had no inkling of what he was about to say and in fact I was checking football scores on my mobile at the time!

It was only after a few minutes that I realised that he was talking about me, which was rather embarrassing. For one moment I thought he was reading out my obituary but after checking and finding I was still alive I viewed his words much more positively!

Along with all members, I am very fortunate to be in such a strong club and in my view our strength in depth is better than at any time in my membership. Once again, sincere thanks.

As a result of mass mailings this week to all clubs in the Southwest and South Wales, tickets are now flying out the door quicker than you can say Bob Faris! So, if you want to guarantee a ticket, you'd better get your skates on and book pretty soon.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Items For Sale
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
