The Perfect Fall Season
Fall 2011 has proved to be a great season to garden... don't miss out on this weekend's opportunity to get out and plant! There's still time to spruce up your pots with cold hardy plants like pansies, violas, kale, cabbage, and mustard. Here are a few pics from my porch...
Swiss Chard mixed with Majestic Giants Mixed Pansies
Carrots, Lettuce, Broccoli, Swiss Chard, Giant Kale, Bull's Blood Beets
Bok Choy, Ornamental Peppers, Ornamental Kale
Add edible foliage to your containers and enjoy crunching on them into the the Winter season! My favorite Fall leafy green is Swiss Chard, just saute it with some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic and salt/pepper to taste... goes well with fish, pork and chicken! PLANT IT NOW, so it can get rooted in before the soil starts to cool down!

Bring In The Plants,
Not The Bugs!
Prepare Your Houseplants NOW To Move Inside For The Winter
Follow these simple steps to ensure a bug-free winter:
- Carefully inspect each plant and scout for insects or eggs, be sure to check the soil, under the leaves and the underside of the pot.
- If insects are present, use an insecticidal soap spray that is labeled safe for indoor usage. Finely mist the entire plant and pot, make sure to spray the undersides of the leaves. A second application is recommended a few days later.
- To help ensure the plant will remain bug-free, insert systemic insecticide tablets into the soil. We recommend Bayer 2-in-1 Insect Control Plus Fertilizer (10 packs are $7.99) which will protect the plant from the inside out and feed it for 8 weeks. A 10" potted plant will need 2-3 tablets. This will prevent the need to spray insect control indoors. If you tend to get little whiteflies or gnats during the winter, this will keep them out!
- Cut back on watering once the plants are indoors, usually a weekly watering will be sufficient. Overwatering can cause root rot and other disease issues (not to mention unwanted water stains on the mantel!)
